It's an island waaaaaaaaaay down the end of the Aleutian Chain. Dutch Harbor is half-way there between Anchorage and Shemya, so that gives you kind of an idea where it's located. The Air Force owns the island and has a power plant out there on the facility. I represent about 80 workers out there so I'm going out for a visit. I'll be there until Wednesday IF I can get in, and if I can get out. Weather can be a big-time factor.
I'm going out on a passenger jet that the AF is providing. It'll take me three hours to get there.
I'm jazzed about this trip because I've never been that far out before. And I hope I don't get stuck there for days and days.

I have a meeting with my peeps the evening I get there. This will be interesting. Those poor people have a 90 days on/21 days off work schedule. Ai yi yi.

I've actually been there! I was stationed in Adak back in the late 90s, and Shemya was a normal stop when flying off the island on a military flight. I don't remember there being much of anything there except for a small air terminal. I've also been to Dutch Harbor. We were forced to land there when the weather closed in on Adak and we couldn't land. We had to stop in DH to refuel.

I've seen aerial pictures of what they have out there. It has a lot of history from WWII.
