It did. Their CEO got fired because of it. He restructured the pricing and cut out coupons without even testing it in test markets first. He'd make huge company-wide decisions and made massive lay-offs and they finally realized it wasn't working and fired him. There's a new commercial out basically saying 'we fucked up, come back!!'

It flopped, badly. I saw a JC Penney commercial last week that was a big apology. A "we made mistakes, we listened to customer feedback, we changed, please come back to us" sort of deal.
I am sad that their pricing structure was not more successful. I'm kind of over the stores where everything is always on sale. It is dishonest to me. If you call something a sale, but it is the same price all the time, it is not really a sale.
I was a JCP the other day because I got a coupon in the mail. I was really disappointed. The store was bare. I used to buy sealy pillows there (not carried anymore) and bras. I did buy 2 bras but the options were very limited.
Ron Johnson is pretty much going down as the worst CEO in history.
During his tenure, the store's sales dropped nearly 30% by conservative accounts.
BUT I LOVE some of the basics they've been carrying. I've found my favorite short sleeve and long sleeve shirts at JCPenney last year. So much so, that I actually bought them in multiple colors because they are so flattering. I'm SAD that when I went back last week, I couldn't find anything similar in solid colors...it had already started going back to super "trendy" items.
I like JCPenney. I like cheap stuff. I like coupons. I'm a well rounded person.
But for real, I do like JCP. I feel like they kind of "get" how to cater to us chubby people. Slightly longer lengths, nice clothing, not grandma like. I have a few sweaters from there that I love.

Mine has been bare too, I was wondering if it was just our store, since I live in such a small town. I needed a couple more towels to round out a set and they were completely out in several colors. I thought it was odd.
I loved what Ron Johnson did. I'm not close to a JCP here so I rarely go but I went last summer when I was visiting my parents. I was thrilled! I loved how less chaotic the store felt.
Ugh. I get pissed when I go to Kohls, spend 60 bucks and they tell me I saved 90. I have an overwhelming urge to yell BULLSHIT at the cashier. Just price it the price it is.
I got a coupon in the mail the other day but the JCP closest to me is closed due to a fire! I'm too lazy to drive 15-20 minutes to the next closest one. It better open soon before the coupon expires, lol.
Also, I thought the flat, no-coupon prices were too high. I'm not paying $40 for a JCP shirt.

People are so stupid. I really liked their new (now old) system because it was so EASY. I have enough shit to think about without holding onto 800 JCP coupons and remembering to get there between 1:40 and 7:32 PM to get maximum discounts. It is mind-blowingly ridiculous that they had to APOLOGIZE for not tricking their customers with a bunch of stupid fucking coupons.
I just want to drop in and buy a slightly matronly shirt because I haven't done laundry in a while and I want to pay $8 for it with no planning or forethought whatsoever.

I really liked it for H. Is is tall and their shirts and stuff for tall guys were much cheaper than other stores. And I hate having to remember coupons.
It seemed like the store got a little more organized after they changed. Before, it seemed like everything was on one big clearance rack. I hope it doesn't turn into that again.

YES. Most talls are big and tall. JCP has a good selection for tall thin guys. I buy so much of their misses talls for myself.
H likes to get his shirts and t-shirts there, because he is a tall XL in the standard white Stafford T-shirts. We took our $10 coupon to JCP on Sat. Men's dept was bare. We had trouble finding his T-shirts. Then we tried to find a Stafford white dress shirt in his size (which isn't a rare size). We couldn't find any white dress shirts in his size. We looked at every brand. Finally he found an Izod dress shirt. It was marked $50, marked down to $25, but should have been $25 anyway. We went to get in line for to check out. Another fail. It took forever. One of the cashiers chatted with customers for 5 or 6 minutes about her mamere. When we finally got waited on the cashier told us that their little portable swipey cashout machines are actually Iphones. She said then when the store is crowded, the cashout machines get bogged down and don't work well, because they are sharing the network with all the other smart phones in the store. Nice planning JCP. I don't think I'll be back.
To offset bringing coupons back, they are doubling prices on a bunch of stuff. Except, the coupons they're having now don't bring the prices back down to the "fair and square" prices they were selling for two and a half weeks ago. I already bitched about this all over a different board, though.
That sucks!
Wow, I didn't realize they were going to do this. I just looked up a pair of pants I bought for 25 a month ago and now they are $38. wtf. I was actually starting to shop there, but I guess not anymore.
I'm glad they're changing back. Their styles were horrible recently. Even the staple stuff was bad fabrics and cuts (Spandex cami's? no thank you). I used to always be able to go and find cute summer dresses on sale at good deals without coupons. I hope they recover, because I'm sick of the only department store option being Macy's.

Lol, well my H is definitely not thin, but he has a super long torso and their shirts are the best for him for the price.
