It's more than likely an air gun or paint ball gun; both look like "real" guns from a distance.
I don't know if I'd ever call the cops on someone for having a scary looking gun in their garage, when I don't know the whole story.
Lots of people shoot birds with pellet guns, bb guns, etc. Doesn't make it right, but it happens. There are laws about shooting around houses. If she REALLY wants to do it, she could call about him shooting the birds around the homes (you cannot shoot facing a home, you cannot shoot within so much distance of another home, so likely he IS doing something wrong) and then mention the gun.
ETA: and if it's a real gun, the guy is an idiot. A real gun left open to the air/uncontrolled temps of a garage will rust and lock all the mechanisms in the gun. (Which can cause greater bodily harm in the event of a misfire or something) So I understand the person who said "no real owner would...." if that's what they were getting at.

I'm not willing to stake kids' lives and well-being on "more than likely;" and even still, air guns and paint ball guns are still dangerous in the wrong hands.
Absolutely. Air guns and paint ball guns can leave huge welts that hurt. And you know, little eyes and such being hurt.
I just don't think she can call the police about a gun in a garage, she'd have to call about him shooting around homes and maybe work in the gun in the garage and being concerned?
If it's not some terrible, crime - ridden city, the cops will not have a problem stopping by. Do people think the police spend their entire shift flying around town, sirens blazing, arresting bad guys?
No gun owner would be so reckless as to display a gun like that, so it must be fake! Lolololol. Yep, and there are no accidental shootings either.

Just read a story last week about how a 4 year old accidentally shot and killed his toddler sibling. The family thought the Crickett (rifle made especially for children) was unloaded. Where they stored it? In it's usual place.. the corner, leaning against the wall. 4 year old picked up his (yes, his) gun and took it outside to play with, pulled the trigger and shot the toddler in the chest with a bullet that was left in the chamber.
do you live near me? I read that in my local paper.
look, I'm from east Texas, where nearly every home has a gun or two and many boys are taught to shoot guns and go hunting at an early age. thus the market for children's guns. however, it is stupidity on the part of the parents to a) keep a gun loaded and b) keep a gun, even a children's gun, out in the open.
they don't need to, but they can. it's a sport here and can be taught safely at a young age. but that is supposed to include safe storage of firearms, which the aforementioned family did not do.
ftr, I don't hunt, have never shot a gun, and don't intend on my *future* sons hunting at a young age, certainly not before they've started school. I don't want to get into a gun control debate. I just believe that if one owns guns, whether they are adult guns or smaller ones sized for younger children, one should handle and store them safely.

I have nothing helpful to add other than in my neighborhood (there are no alleys) everyone leaves their garage doors open. It's a thing here, I don't know why. I'm still getting used to it.
Because it's their God-given right. America! Fuck yeah!
Did you read the follow up article to that incident where the family is like "Well, shiiiiit, accidents happen, y'all! She's with Jesus now! Guess it was just her time!" These people are fucking disgusting.

WHAT?! That is disgusting.
I don't believe in giving young children guns, I hate that they make "child sized" guns, and I HATE that you can take a 6 year old hunting. A 6 year old hunting is just another doe tag for the father because the father is the one that ultimately shoots the gun; as guns are heavy and 6 year olds are....6 year olds! There is NO business for a child that young to be out "hunting", let alone owning a gun of their own.

Future BIL was shot in the eye with a paintball gun when he was playing paintball with some friends. He nearly lost his vision and had to have a fake lens put in.
