What do you think factors into which bands develop a crazy, rabid following? Like what do ICP, the Grateful Dead, Phish, and Jimmy Buffett have that Bryan Adams and Coldplay do not?

This is genuinely interesting to me! I mean, I like the Foo Fighters a lot. I will go see them in concert when they are within a 3 state radius. I might even take a day off work to do so if necessary and if it wouldn't be detrimental to my job.
However. If asked to describe myself I would not list "Foo Fighters fan" in my top five characteristics. I don't think the same can be said for Parrotheads.
I don't think it's fair at all to lump ICP in with those others. For starters, the others have actual talent.
Including Jimmy Buffett?
Um, I can't actually comment on Jimmy Buffet personally. I've never heard anything by him (except for drunk assholes singing his songs.) But I do know people into him that otherwise have good taste in music, so I'd guess he does. He's certainly not as shitty as ICP (which I have heard, sadly. My brother is a Juggalo and I've politely listened to a few songs with him.)

One difference between a band like Foo Fighters and Phish or the Dead is that Foo Fighters will play the exact same song list for the entire tour whereas the other two can play a four night run and every show will be completely different. There really isn't any incentive to see Foo Fighters more than once a year so they don't attract a following.
