I think you're sort of local to me. I'm trying to figure out what races to register for this summer, and I wanted to find out if there are any in June and July that you recommend. Thanks!
Based on your races, I'm guessing that you are in Indy Metro? Indy Runners has a pretty good list of local (to you) races: www.indyrunners.org/race-calendar.aspx. I haven't done many races in Indy, because I'm far enough south of the city that I end up having to wake up at like 4AM to do them, plus there is the issue of having to go up there the night before for packet pickup. Blah, blah, blah, anyway, I have done Sam Costa, Geist, and the Monumental, none of which are in June or July. I have heard that Outrun the Sun was good; it is a five mile race in early June. I signed up for that the year of the great flood (2008), but I wasn't able to get up there to run it because of the flooding.
I don't sign up for many races in the summer here because I'm too type A about my race times to risk oppressive heat and humidity.
I've heard that the Planet Adventure Eagle Creak Trail Race is good, but it is at the beginning of August, not in June or July. They have a full, half, and quarter marathon. I have had the webpage up in my browser for about a week debating if I will sign up and if so, just how many miles of trail I want to attempt. I have heard that it is a fairly shaded course so that it feels a bit cooler than most summer road races will.
What races are you signed up for in the next few months?
ETA: I'm also signed up for the Mill Race Marathon down in Columbus on September 28. It is an inaugural race, so it might be a cluster, but who knows, I think it is being run by Tux Bros (or similar) anyway, one of the big race companies in Indy is putting on the race, so it will probably work out fine.
Thanks! I'm going to check out check the Indy runners calendar. I started c25k last July, so this will be my first summer running more than a mile and a half at a time. I'm a bit concerned about racing in Indy humidity. I'm hoping I make it.
Right now I'm planning doing the indy Women's half, Purdue half, Drumstick dash(if we stay in town for Thanksgiving), and the Jingle bell 10k. I'll probably add some 5ks in there somewhere too, since my goal is one race a month.
Speaking of having races up own your screen, I've had the Geist half up all day. I'm considering running the half instead of the 5k, but I haven't really done any hill training. Would suggest the half considering the MinI was my first hm, and Geist is next week?
Gah. I can't answer objectively about Geist because I ran a really crappy race. My bad race can likely be attributed in part to the heat and humidity and in part because I had just the Flying Pig Marathon a few weeks earlier - I don't think my legs were fully recovered. The course was fine, there were a few blah neighborhoods that we went through, but overall a reasonable course; maybe a bit hilly considering that it is Indiana, but not unreasonable hilly. The shirt was kind of ugly, but I like how it fits, so I still wear it a fair amount. There was good food in the finish chute. I don't remember what it was, but I remember thinking that it was pretty stacked with food.
