Well it appears that DH has been passed on to the final process in the interview stage (HOLY SHIT), and his current boss is a reference (she accepted back in September to be a reference). She has known that he´s been on the market since September, but we haven´t disclosed anymore information about the process. She´s been contacted as a reference about this new job, and DH didn´t tell her about the campus interview.
He felt that he didn´t want to tell her about it, because it was too premature in the process, and he didn´t want to freak her out. He also felt that he didn´t want to tell her until it was further in the process, so that he was ready to negotiate at the right time.
I know that we are totally clueless when it comes to this whole thing.
I never did. My H recently did some out of state interviews, and he's a crappy liar, so he decided to tell his boss why he needed the time off rather than make something up. He told his boss it was nothing personal; we wanted to relocate to New England.
Even so, his boss was a little cool to him the next few months, figuring my H was out the door. H missed out on a few good assignments. He thinks his boss was looking to throw the good stuff to people who would be around.
H did get offered one of the jobs but we decided to turn it down. He told his boss that and everything went back to normal. He and his boss have a pretty open, buddy-buddy relationship and I think that is key.

The past four jobs I have had (including the one I'm in now) I would be / have been able to do this. And one that I had quite a long time ago now. (That job was less than awesome, but the boss was the best I've ever had. I loved her.)
Ditto this. My former manager I would have been able to talk to openly about it, she would have been happy for me wanting to further my career. New manager, no way. She hates me already why give her more reason!
Nope. Years ago I was offered a position elsewhere, I didn't breathe a word of it until I told my boss. He quite immediately wrangled all the VPs (I work for a small company) and they countered with more than the other job offered to keep me. Which was a sweet deal and complete surprise, I only wanted to leave for $$... I'm still there 5 years later
