When we were in SC visiting friends it sounded like people were saying "bolled penis".
H ordered them at a hockey game while we were there and it was like peanuts in a shell boiled in water. Basically mush. They sell them in stores here in NY...in a can.
OMG the are sooooo good. Warm, mushy, salty, nutty heaven. They taste best straight from a big, rusty barrel at a road side vegetable stand in the mountains served by a guy missing a few teeth.
We served them during the cocktail hour at our wedding in a fresh, heaping pile on the bar. We also had watermelon cubes as appetizers (the caterer insisted on making them fancy with feta, mint, and a honey drizzle) and served fried chicken and ham for dinner. And we served pink lemonade in mason jars. God I love the South.

they are okay. i will eat them if i am really hungry but i will usually pass. they have to be spiced correctly, they shouldn't be mushy, soft but still a firmness to them. i can see how they would be like a spiced bean.

I don't get it either. I had a roommate in college insist on making these in a crockpot. She cooked them for days. The smell! Oh, the smell! I had some of the most brutal hangovers amplified because of those stupid boilied peanuts. Then she sat there and slurpped as she ate them. It was nauseating.

This is true. They shouldn't be a total glob of mush and should hold it's shape out of the shell.

Roasting > boiling in every situation I can think of.
Yes and I don't know why. However, the best way to eat a boiled peanut, in my opinion, is to put about half of the peanut into your mouth and bite down a bit on the shell so it splits open. The shell holds some water inside, and this delicious, salty, peanutty liquid comes out. You suck out the liquid, then open the shell to get the peanuts.

I LOVE boiled peanuts! I really only liked the canned ones. My husband thinks I am insane and my 3 year old thinks they are amazing. Definitely an acquired taste. My mom used to bring them home in her suitcase when we'd visit our family in Alabama because we couldn't find them in California. She recently found some at the Dollar Tree where she lives and bought them out. In fact, I opened a can earlier this week.
Referencing yesterday's thread about Florida not being the south......after I got married my Florida native MIL insisted I learn some southern cooking. Three things she tried to teach me were how to make boiled peanuts, grits, and chicken fried steak. I hate all three. My Florida native husband hates all three. So it worked out well.
I only had boiled peanuts in Florida from one of those roadside stands and while everyone gushed about how great they were, I was ready to hurl. The texture is awful. It's not even the taste so much as how weird it felt. Not to mention everyone I was with slurped the peanuts.
