I apologize if someone already commented on this, but I didn't catch it.
In Thursday's post about the Adirondack chairs, this caught my eye:
"We successfully resisted our instincts to cheap out and get plastic ones because we’re enamored with the real-deal-Holyfield wood ones and knew that plastic ones would be what we call “an interim item” (something we’d buy but and then later be annoyed that we didn’t just put that money toward the actual thing we wanted and save until we could make it happen). So we generally try to avoid placeholder stuff. "
Um, I'm sorry, but they buy a whole bunch of "placeholder stuff." We've commented on that a lot here. I am really surprised they wrote this kind of a post in a sense defending spending slightly more money on these chairs and proclaiming that they don't cheap out.
I think they cheap out all the time on crappy stuff (hello, kitchen stools and dining room chairs) that does need to be replaced.
They've put themselves in a difficult spot because many people see them as budget friendly and then they do have to defend themselves when they spend more than $100 for something. But sympathy aside for this difficult spot, it really irked me that they claimed they don't do placeholder stuff--because they certainly do.
That's a really weird comment from them. I like a balance. Some things I prefer to wait for the high quality, but sometimes it's worth just buying the cheap one.

I just thought that particular comment was really hypocritical. They do clearly by temporary stuff; they don't always save up their pennies for a permanent thing.
They constantly contradict themselves. They say whatever they must to justify a decision at the moment, even if they come back later and say the opposite.
This is something I'm trying to work on. I'm such a cheapass and sometimes buy what is cheaper rather than what I really want. Then I end up still wanting the other thing and go and buy it.
However, I do NOT cobble together cabinet doors because that is just cuckoo bananas.
Eh, I don't know. Isn't it a balance we all have to find? I know I do. I have cheaped out on almost all the furniture on the 2nd floor of our house (free? great!), yet I won't replace our ripping family room sectional (which we use all the damn time) because I'm saving my pennies for The Perfect Leather Sofa. My choice to use free furniture in my office doesn't make my desire to save up for just the right sofa less valid.
I do agree that ADK chairs are an odd choice for a splurge item, though.
