We have a Honda Civic and pretty soon (2lbs or so) the infant carseat will no longer be good. Any suggestions on carseats? Also, I think I might need a taller one since Layla is long compared to a lot of babies. (all her footed pjs are too small)
We have a two door Civic and a Britax Roundabout fits RF just fine. The biggest problem with a small two door car is getting LO in and out if the seat comes up high on the sides. The Roundabout seat is fairly shallow (if that makes sens) but it's still a total pain to get him in and out.
If your Civic is 4 door I'm pretty sure almost any convertible will fit just fine.
We have a Civic and got a Safety First Complete Air 65. At recline #3 (rather than #4 for a newborn) it indeed takes up less room front-to-back than the infant seat did. We weren't concerned about width as we only have one kid for now (and only plan 2).
For older kids who can support their heads, almost all convertible seats (in the US) can be installed RFing at less than a 45 degree angle (like 35 degrees), so they fit fine RFing in almost any car (and often take up less room front to back than an infant seat). If you are looking for a narrower seat to preserve the other rear seats, the Radians are supposed to be narrower (and also taller). www.car-seat.org/ has lots of info on specific seats. Seats that I've heard have short shells include the Scenera (but also has a low-weight limit of 45 lbs FF) and the Combi Cocorro. We have a TrueFit that has a pretty tall shell.
You can also go to a baby store with a tape measure and check the height of the shell (measure from the deepest part of the seat to the top of the shell). The height limits that the manufacturer's post are not always accurate because a long-legged baby with a short torso will fit in a seat much longer than a long-torsoed baby.
Here there are a lot of stores that will allow you to try installing different carseats before you buy them. If you can do that, your decision might be easier. Our carseat also fits better in the middle using the seatbelt instead of LATCH in terms of legroom, so the best fit might not be the way you've installed the infant seat.
And, if you're allowed to install at less than 45 degrees, the Radian has an angle adjuster that can be bought for around $10... it gives a lot of extra space. Here's the link: goo.gl/kH7uG
We had the Britax Roundabout and the Birtax Boulevard in my Matrix with no issue. Buy Buy Baby helped us take it to the parking lot to try it out before purchase.
We have a Marathon and a Diono (formerly Radian) in our Civic. The Diono is better forward facing, but surprisingly, the Marathon works better rear facing. The angle on the rear facing Diono is brutal, and the angle adjuster had been out of stock for months when we bought our seats.

I ordered the angle adjuster last month sometime... and, even though it said out of stock, with an estimated delivery date of 3 weeks, it came within a week.
