Hey MN,
If you could be anywhere in the US to celebrate the 4th of July where would it be? Where we live the 4th of July is not celebrated until a few days later but that's not when DH will have leave.
Off the top of my head I'm thinking any major city would do. DH has been to Washington, DC but I haven't. I have been to NYC, but DH hasn't. Cities on the East Coast would probably be the most cost effective although neither of us have been home to California in a couple years.
I realized that's a butt ton of factors but where would MN go?

We spent last 4th of July in Boston and it was awesome. They have a great fireworks show over the water in the harbor and the Boston Pops play a concert, plus there is so much history there and a lot to see. We loved it.

Hmm,
Boston is just about the top of our cheap vacation list because it's so close by and DH has had so much work the past couple of years that we really have not explored Boston as much as we intended to do. I'll definitely include that on my pitch list.
Colonial Williamsburg also sounds wonderful but I'm temped to put it in my pocket for next year due to the chance that we'll be moving to Norfolk for DH's shore duty.

I didn't spend a 4th in the States until I was 16 (at least not in my memory). My family's from another country, and we'd always be with them in the summer.
When I was 16, we happened to be in a nat'l park on the 4th. The celebration was red/white/blue ice cream sundaes. It was pathetic, especially compared to the huge fireworks we'd set off for the holiday when we weren't even in America.
So, personally, I'd go wherever it is you want to go, and if it's a great celebration, awesome, if not, you're still in a place you want to experience.
We've been debating NYC, DC, or Boston for the 4th and I think we settled on Boston. If anyone has any recommendations for where to stay, eat, and things to do with a 5yr old, I'd love to hear them!

But then after I spent an hour looking at stuff in Boston, I got a new idea to go to Atlantic City instead. I'm starting to think maybe we'd rather have an inexpensive resort vacation if we can find one.
Edit: Okay, you know what. Eff that. Atlantic City has nothing on Las Vegas. I think for the same money we should just go to Vegas.

I was going to suggest Col. Wmsbg. It's my absolute favorite day trip place to go to; we even have season passes. I'd love to convince DH to go there for the 4th but I'm sure they attract a crowd and DH does not do well in crowds.
