Not irrational.
I think it's great Angelina Jolie shared her story, considering it's a decision many woman are facing, but it's not all that exciting. It's not news.
I don't know what to say about the spy. I'm sure that type of thing happens all the time, with no one the wiser or people turning the other check. The fact that one was actually caught is sort of . Isn't that the most important part of your job?! Not getting caught!
Edit: Plus, I think the news is running away with the spy story because the Boston bombers were from Russia and this is where the spy was trying to recruit.
For women who have gone through a similar experience, it's a huge deal to them that she 1- did it and 2- is opening up about it. A good friend of mine had a double mastectomy 2 years ago at the age of 41.
Having gone through IF, when someone famous comes out and speaks about how they dealt w/ IF too - it's a big deal to me.
So - I get the uproar, especially from those who have had to make similar choices.
It is a very important part of the job not to get caught, I would assume. lol.
He was trying to turn a Russian agent. There is a point there where one would have to put it out there and be vulnerable. I mean, you can't turn someone without giving them some information about your cause. I guess his target played him. Either that, or the spy did a super shitty job reading the target.
My annoyance is much more minor: I accidentally dropped a brand-new tool of toilet paper into the toilet when I was changing the roll.
I did not hear about the spy who was captured, so I'll have to read up on that. I did read about Angelina Jolie's double mastectomy and the parade shooting. I read that one of the suspects (the suspect?) is only 19. Also, is there a reason they decided it was only street violence and not worthy of national news? I have a theory, but don't have any idea if the facts fit it.

This is what I initially thought it was just reading the story. I assume they stalk these people for awhile, watch their habits, target people who need money, etc. Don't they teach them that in Spy 101?
The other surprising thing is that Russia just outed the American spy instead of having the target become a double agent for Russia.
ECB- Not saying that this is not a big deal to anyone, but it's a personal decision and it's just not news because a celebrity did it. It's not a taboo subject, like IF has been in the past. It's something that has been discussed since genetic testing became available. Also, it's Angelina Jolie. I admit that has something to do with my annoyance. Yes, it can be a controversial decision, but it's personal. Just because Angelina does it doesn't mean it's right for you. If you want to make it news, tell me about the rising number of women that are making this choice- not one person who thinks she's more important than all those women.
Tiramisu- I don't know. I get the impression it was due to the neighborhood. If shootings happen there somewhat regularly, it just isn't considered news. The thing that sets it apart is only the large number of people that were injured. I know that 99% of the shootings that happen around me would never make the national news for similar reasons.
PS- lol! Who knows. Maybe they tried and were unsuccessful? They certainly wouldn't admit to that.
Ugh, I just went to CNN and AJ's smug face is plastered at the top of the headlines.
Muddled, I was wondering if it wasn't just the neighborhood or city, but also the race of the perpetrator and/or victims. I don't know how to express it articulately, but I do believe there's still institutionalized racism that influences how these types of events are viewed and reported on.

I think it's annoying that we hold "celebrities" in such high regard. I mean, really, they're people, they eat, sleep, get sick... Why does it have to be national news when they do all of these things that people everywhere do on a daily basis!
That being said, I do appreciate that AJ is talking about it. If nothing else, it creates an additional opportunity for dialogue. I think that any time you can increase awareness of a very real issue that is affecting so many, and paint it in a positive light, that is a good thing. Do I think it's the most important thing in the news today?? Hell no, but it's not a bad thing either.
Our local news seems to be covering the Mothers Day Shooting fairly well here, but I admit to being fairly ignorant to what's really going on in the world because I'm usually otherwise occupied when H turns on the news at night.

I'm torn about the Angelina thing. On one hand, I'm shocked and think it's neat she's talking about it. I like that there is a discussion about it, and it might help someone make the tough choice themselves. On the other, regular people aren't going to have her 5 star experience with the whole process. It might be a little bit easier to take if money and time are no object. Not to say she didn't have pain or struggle with the decision, but there are factors that don't come into play for her that would for the average Jane.
Muddled, your annoyance isn't irrational because it's fucking disgusting that the general public finds this more important than everything else going on
I guess I feel like if I did it and it wouldn't make the news, it shouldn't make the news if someone else did it either.
For example, if I had a double mastectomy, no one would give a shit. Not news. If I was busted spying on Russia, there might be a buzz. News. If I shot up a bunch of people on Mother's Day? News. If I ordered the IRS to target conservative groups? News.
You catch my drift?
Basically, I am indeed the center of the universe.
So great. Now Angela Jolie will be around forever but we're still not getting Gilda Radner back.
This made me literally lol. I loved Gilda Radner. Re: AJ, I think it's great that she's going public with this with the awareness and all, but really what I hope is that her going public with her "I had this $3k BRCA test" gets the Supreme Court to overturn the decision that allowed a single drug company to patent that gene mutation (and charge whateverthefuckthey want for the test). $3k might be the difference between life and death for some women.
