I haven't done a thing to the backyard in two years. There are some good plants which haven't all come up yet, but I have some questions before I tackle things. 1) should we attempt to raise the garden? I would have to get some pots to hold the plants while I do this. 2) or would you say weeding and mulching is all it needs?
We are going to fix the grass and have to remove the corner tree because the trunk broke off entirely during the ice storm last month and it won't last having suffered so much damage.
I want advice & opinions before I say fuck it and mulch then can't bother raising the beds. Not pictured- the garden spans the entire back fence and l shapes against our garage. The plants are mostly fern & hosts when the fill in late June.

I think it would look odd raised along side the fence. You've got a really nice start already. I agree with mulch or river rock and some sort of edging or defined border between the grass and the garden.
Don't raise! Weed, mulch, and take the blade of a shovel to cut clean lines between the grass and bed.
And add some trinkets. We have some solar butterflies that light up at night, a old red wagon with annuals, and other things.
A birdbath would look nice.
It looks good, just a few finishing touches.
this is how it was originally, but its getting sloppy after two years so i'll touch it up.
i'm going to have to think about garden decor. i quite like the looking balls and iron sculptures.
DH picked up one this weekend at Lowes that is also solar powered and glows at night. I was not a fan of all the solar things, but they are growing on me. The kids really like them.
ETA- the flat dragonflies for the back fence. I don't know where to put the bee, or if I like it, but it was cheap. I'll set the stakes after I mulch Monday. My mum is coming to baby watch for me so I can work on this.
I move my little guys on stakes all the time since it is always changing when different things are in bloom (and because the boy is always pulling them out to play with)
How old is your LO? Last year we took old shoes that no longer fit and made planters out of them. The kids thought it was hilarious that flowers were coming out of shoes. You could also do they diy hand print walking stone. I have tried to pull the kids into it as much as possible. This year we are doing a veggie garden and they are so excited as things come up.
