I was going to post this, too! The part about looking at houses that weren't for sale shocked me, esp. since they always have negative things to say. I could never insult my friends' home if they went out of their way to allow it to be taped for TV.

You know... it totally makes sense to me now! There were a couple times where it seemed obvious that they should go with option 1 (because its perfect and meets all their expectations) when they actually pick option 2 (which doesnt). Hmmm. So disappointed.
I'm surprised so many people (based on the comments in that post) are surprised by this. I thought it was pretty common knowledge that the show was like this?
I have a friend who was on HH International and they showed them in the US, mailing boxed to England where they were just moving to, when in reality they had been living in England for 3 years already.
I knew it was pretty fake and staged, but I didn't know they showed them houses that weren't even for sale. I just assumed they picked some randoms in a similar price range to the house the people already bought..
I knew it was fake, but had no idea they toured friends' homes. I would die if I had to tell the camera how dated and small I thought the house was if it was owned by someone I know and like, who is doing me a favor!

Geez.
Yep... but now it will be more interesting to watch and see if I can pick out the clues and guess which house they already bought, knowing how the filming/acting really works.
oooh, did you see the other post linked at the bottom for the dish on Designed to Sell? I knew about HH because I had a friend on it (who did NOT look at friends' houses and did look at ones for sale, just not ones they had or even would consider), but I didn't know about DTS!

My H worked on several HGTV shows and we would watch them together sometimes. Pretty much everyone on DTS who came to see the house was on the crew. He would tell me who they were as they would come in. He pretty much ruined reality tv for me (except for Top Chef - he worked on that, too, and has nothing but great things to say about it). I wish I could remember some of the stuff he told me, but it was so long ago (back in the Suzanne Whang - sp?- days).
generally, i can guess because they pick the house that doesn't have stuff in it. the people moving out are packed and gone 95% of the time. though sometimes they must tour other for sale houses because there are 2 empty.
Haha! This "expose" was just on Good Morning America! lol
Did the production company not have its guests sign a confidentiality agreement? It's one thing for a friend to tell a friend it's a sham, but now that it's on the national news, I'd think they'd get kinda mad.
