We are staying in Southern Shores for a week in July. Any thing we must do? I am a Jersey Shore girl and have only been to the OBX once and my googling is not helping. Any ideas? We are going with IL and there will be 3 kids (a 7 year old girl and two boys- 1 and 3). Thanks!
I used to go to Emerald Isle yearly as a kid, but I haven't been back in about 10 years. We're going back July 6 -13.
I don't know what there is to do. My goal is to be just drunk enough to be able to ignore family drama (We're renting four houses and filling them up with all of our family) but not too drunk so I can you know be a responsible parent.
I'm from NJ and have been to the OBX once, too. We stayed in Corolla and rented a house with some friends.
They liked just sitting on the beach or beside the house's pool all day. MH and I prefer to explore, so we took a drive to the Wright Brothers site in Kitty Hawk, and there was an outlet mall around there as well where we bought some stuff.
I remember that Duck was the active part of the island.
It was a pretty place, and the beach was very clean and nice, but I think I'd rather just go to the Jersey Shore next time. The 8-hour drive wasn't worth it for us.
If you're into sight seeing - ditto the Wright Brothers Memorial. I thought it was pretty cool. we also drove up to the Corolla lighthouse last year.
Past that - we go to OBX because it's a chilled vacation. We're largely about hanging out at the house/ on the beach. We'll take the kids to mini-golf, perhaps. And maybe out for dinner one night. But by and large, we don't really go to OBX to go out and do stuff.

Yea, I def prefer Jersey. I hear you on the drive. We are 1.5 from OC and about 9 from OBX. Plus in Jersey, There's always something to do. I was kinda bored the last time we went to the OBX, but I am hoping it will be different now that we have kids. Last time we did the Wright Brothers thing and ate at some nice places. If only there was a boardwalk...

Have you ever been to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware? We went a couple summers ago with some friends and we had a blast. It was a nice family-friendly town, and still fun for our group (none of us had kids at the time).
We live near Newark and it took around 3.5 hours to get there. I really hope we can go back.

I have been to rehoboth. I used to spend my summers waiting tables in Ocean City, MD and we'd go to rehoboth when we needed a change. I love it down there!

I live 2 hours from OBX and go there quite often. As PP's suggested...the Wright Brother's Museum, Jockey's Ridge, there's an Aquarium in Manteo, the Elizabethan Gardens. You could also drive on the beach if you have 4WD but you have to pay for that now. I believe it's $50 for a week or $120 for a year. They're getting stricter about which beaches you can drive on now because there's some kind of bird that nests around there. Fishing is a big thing out there. There are a couple of mini golf places near Duck. There are some outlets. You can't go wrong with jet-ski's. You should also definitely look into doing a horse tour in Corolla.

As others have said, Wright Brothers Memorial, Jockey Ridge, horse tour in Corolla (this was my favorite thing we did on our trip). For food I recommend Outer Banks Brewing Company and Blue Moon Beach Grill. There's also several lighthouses down there you can visit.

Thanks again! We ate at the outer banks brewing company and loved it! We also did Awful Arthur's (gag) and a pretty good BBQ place. I think the issue before was that it was just my il, bil, my h and me in this huge house - kinda boring. This time there will be bil's girlfriend, her daughter and our kids. Should bring some excitement. Thank so much for the ideas! We will probably d o them all. Well, except for driving on the beach. We have a mini-van!
