Is there such a thing? I need something for guests in our basement den (aka man cave); there is an actual guest room with Queen bed & full bathroom also in the basement but need a bit more sleeping room down there.
If someone knows of a good brand & even a specific bed I'd appreciate it!
Edit: or maybe a futon? are these only acceptable in a dorm room?
Our sleeper sofa is from La Z Boy, and they offer an upgraded mattress that is comfortable. It is basically a mattress with an air mattress on top. We chose to get the regular mattress with a memory foam topper. It was much cheaper that way, but it is a hassle to store the foam pad.
We have a futon in our den, bought from the Futon Shop, but it's solid wood, has storage drawers underneath, and we upgraded the mattress. It's comfy, and we also add a feather topper when we make it up for guests. But I can't say it's cheaper to do it that way than to just buy a sleeper sofa.

Sleeper sofas have come a long way in the last few years. I'd say that many of the larger furniture manufacturers are making them "decently" on the low end and "very well" on the high end of the pricing spectrum. I know that Klaussner offers a wide variety--with their OK-as-far-as-comfort goes for a lower price and some great ones in the higher price area, and since they are mostly an entry level company, would probably fit your design requirements for the "man cave." But the only way to know for sure how comfortable they are is to try them yourself. HTHs.
Are any of these comfortable as sofas? I want to get something like a love seat sleeper, or a chair and a half sleeper for our computer room, and it will 99% be used as seating and 1% used for guests. I'm willing to sacrifice bed comfort for my own comfort for this particular piece of furniture, because most of our guests get our very comfortable queen sized bed in our guest room, and not the "overflow" bed in the office.
It's extremely expensive (it's pretty small) but my XILs had this one at their vacation home in Miami. The mattress was more comfortable than a regular mattress and it was great as a couch (in an office room). I would look for a mattress that looks similar to this if you want it to be comfortable. I have a Crate and Barrel sofa sleeper in my apartment now and it is not comfortable at all.
One of my friends has one with an air mattress built in, it was shockingly comfortable.
Yeah, IDK if it's the same, but we have a select comfort one...the sleep number air bed but in a pullout couch. It was pretty expensive IIRC, but it's very comfortable.

We bought one of these sleeper couches a couple of weeks ago. We needed something that fit in our office and was super comfortable for guests. We also wanted a sleeper downstairs when are daughter was sick and we needed to be closer. We did not buy a leather version.

We just bought the same couch. It is a lot cheaper if you do not get a leather one or an upgraded mattress. We also bought it on sale but it was still around $3000 or a little less. We have been researching this couch for years and finally decided to take the plunge with our daughter on the way.
I'm so bummed Ikea doesn't make the Manstad anymore. It looks to be the style I'd want, for the price I'd want. I'm not super excited about any of the other options on Ikea's site.
Flexsteel offers the sofa bed option in a number of sizes - from twin to Queen. We have a queen size in our basement family room (and yes, it is comfortable to sit on - and guests have said it is also great to sleep on) We paid under 2K for it. We also have a queen size bed in a basement bedroom - but wanted additional sleeping space that was not air mattresses and the sofa sleeper was a great solution that offered both daytime seating and night time sleeping.

We bought a very cheap (like $600) queen sleeper sofa and the mattress is, as you'd expect, not especially comfortable. However, with a 2" memory foam mattress topper on it, it's pretty comfortable. We have to store the mattress topper in the basement when it's not in use and it's heavy to move around, but for our twice a year house guests, it works well.
We tried so many sleeper sofas and finally decided on the IKEA Hemnes daybed. We also got 2 good twin mattresses and a king size mattress pad for it and it was still only $1000 total.
We keep 1 mattress on it at all times and have extra pillows so its a comfy couch. The other mattress is stored in a closet until guests come and then we pull out the pop up trundle to make a short king bed.

We bought a sofa sleeper from Ashley that has a memory foam mattress. It's also really comfy as a sofa. I think it was like $999? They have a lot now that are memory foam.

I slept on one of these at an air bnb two weeks ago-- hands down the best sofa bed I've ever slept in and more comfortable than many guest beds.
x3 vote for American Leather. Both of our families live far away, and tend to descend upon our home in giant numbers so we always try to find furniture that multi-tasks. When we were looking for a sleeper couch for our theater, American Leather seemed to have the best reviews. So we tried one and loved even the basic mattress (though they do have a couple of pricier upgrades). One thing we really like about it is that the sizes are true -- like the queen is a real queen, so buying sheets is easy. There are also so many options available size-wise that you can find pretty much anything you need for your space. Everyone who has slept on it says it's great. The sectional itself is also comfortable.
We loved the brand so much that we bought another couch from them that's not a sleeper. <3
