Apparently my absorption level is low, I just can't remember the simplest of things. I wouldn't care but I hate looking like an idiot at work not knowing whether I've received things back for one job or another.

I have heard that things like playing cards and sudoku are good for the memory. However, I'm not sure if that is more to maintain memory or actually improve it.
I play cards and sodoku but I still can't remember crap. my short term memory is awful. I just write down everything somewhere. for instance, I'm a nurse, so I have a piece of paper that I created to organize myself throughout a shift. it has places to write down my patients' names, their doctors, pertinent info like their diet and IV fluids, and each section is divided by the hour so I can write down what happens throughout the shift. I carry it with me so I can write down notes as I go, then it's all down so when I have time to open up their chart on the computer, I'll remember it.
but that's my method for my situation. maybe you can have some kind of running note for each job that is saved on your computer?

you should read "Moonwalking with Einstein" by Josh Foer. It's about the national memory championships. It doesn't have a ton of "memory techniques" but it might have something you can use (plus it's a great read!)
