I never heard that excuse, mostly because messages from members without photos were usually "I will make you scream baby, give me a chance" etc... or I didn't respond to them.
Weird. My first thought was "they are fugly" and not "they are married". That makes sense, though.
I didn't get that too often and if I did, I would not go long without getting one in a private email or something.
I did have a guy who always mentioned how much he looked like Robert DeNiro harass me for a while. I had to block him twice and then he wrote to me AGAIN and mentioned how he couldn't wait to come by my house and see me. Then, i got scared. Nothing came of it but what a freaking weirdo.

"They want to murder me," is usually my first reaction to everything.
I first did the Personals in 1992 B.I. thats Before the Internet. You answered an ad in the paper by leaving a VM to the persons private mailbox
It still worked that way even in 2000. Even though I suppose we could have exchanged pictures, I never answered an ad with a pic, nor was it expected, even if we went to email. It was kind of exciting to meet without knowing what the guy looked like. Always a surprise: some bad, but some very, very good.

Did you meet your H online?
I'm dating online vicariously through my SIL. I get screenshots of some random and ridiculous shit. Then, someone looks good on paper, they seem legit and then BAM, crazy talk.
I did! I believe my exact words when I first saw his picture, after reading a great email, was 'Yowza!'. lol

No shit, he's hot!!
This gives me hope for my SIL. She's starting to wonder of there are any normal ones.
I definitely met some nutters, but I also met some really nice, funny, got-their-shit-together guys who for one reason or another, it just didn't pan out for us. I think you just have to keep putting yourself out there and I mean that IRL and doing online dating.
I used to got to bars and some club type places by myself. Generally, I went to places where I either knew people who worked there or wanted to see a band I knew I liked and I always had the story that I was supposed to be meeting friends. 1) I felt good not just sitting around alone on a Friday/Saturday night and 2) I met some great guys that way.
So you just keep trying, keeping a positive outlook and it will happen. Oh, I don't know where she lives, but there was a young professionals group that I joined that did events like a dinner out where you are assigned to a certain table and see if you click with someone to fun activities and trips for professional singles. It was fun!
I tried online dating 10 years ago. On day 2, I got a message from my office building's creepy.as.fuck janitor. I deleted everything and never went back for more.
