DH and I are thinking of taking a 3-day vacation to NYC. We haven't been in a few years, and we're looking forward to seeing the new Tony Award musical "Once".
Where (district-wise) should we stay?
DH didn't get to visit a few landmarks last time, so this time we'd like to visit the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, See "Once" the musical (Theater District), Chinatown to name a few...
I was just in NYC and stayed in Chelsea at the Maritime. It was a fun location near the high line park. I had never stayed in that area of Manhattan and had a great time.
Depends on what you're looking for and what your factors are for accomodations. Is price a factor for you? Depending on your budget, Central Park is always where I recommend staying. Walking East from Lincoln Center and Columbus Circle, you can find a ton of really nice hotels right along the lower edge of the park.
If price is a factor, I'd suggest somewhere near Midtown East or Chelsea even, where it's still nice, but a little more affordable.
SoHo and Chinatown is a bit of a cluster. Too much traffic and crowds. I wouldn't recommend there.
Is price or neighborhood more important? What you considered using Priceline? H and I did that and ended up staying in the Financial District. It was fine because there weren't hoards of tourists and we didn't mind walking/using the subway for everything.

We stayed at the Paramount on 42nd and loved it. It was a very trendy and great location wise. I think it averaged $230 the nights we were there, which was impressive from the $500+ for the other hotels in the area. You can probably get cheaper if you don't want to be right in the middle of Times Square.
