Next year is our 5 year wedding anniversary. How the hell did that happen! Anyway, we're trying to decide on what to do and where to go. The actual date is May 30, and we'd like to do something at that time. So far we've thrown around an Alaska cruise, Boston (DW is a HUGE Redsox fan) and Buenos Aires.
How have you celebrated? I'd love ideas and suggestions. It's still a year away, but I'm a planner - obviously - and I'd like to have an idea of how much we'll need to save up. We're also going to start TTC next year so this will likely be the last big trip for a couple years.

Um...we like to buy a house.
Just kidding! This year is our 5 year anniversary - if we weren't buying a house, we'd do something. Typically we don't buy gifts, we go on trips. Sometimes it's 3 day trip, or longer. If this is your last trip before you TTC, then I'd do something big!
I'd check hotel costs / flights to help you determine how much to save. Trips that involve a flight usually end up being $2k - $3k when all is said and done. It could be less, but we like to stay in nice hotels and have nice dinners on vacation.
We are lame in that for us an expensive dinner out is how we celebrate a big anniversary (for our 5th we went to Ruth's Chris and it was so delish). But DH's kids from his first marriage are still in HS so we save our vacation time to take trips with them.
I will say for our 10th anniversary we plan to go to Italy for 2 weeks and take the honeymoon trip we weren't able to do after we got married.

pantsparty that's part of the problem, I'm totally a princess when it comes to hotels and flights. I'm hoping we can keep it to $3k or under since I really want to put wood floors in this year. Maybe we'll have to count those as our Christmas present this year.

Last year when we went to Europe, that trip definitely counted as our Christmas and birthday gifts! And it was well worth it

It's all about juggling priorities.
We chose to get season tickets for hockey instead of buying more furniture. LOL.
It will be our 3rd anniversary on May 29th, and have only ever done fancy dinners to date. I am not a HUGE fan of traveling, but I'd imagine we will go somewhere nice for our 10th, and possibly our 5th.
H and I will be celebrating our 5 year next March and we're planning a trip too. We never went on a honeymoon and all vacations are with the kids, we've never even had a full weekend away alone. We're currently debating between Vegas (a friend is getting married 2 days after our anniversary) or an island trip.
Usual anniversaries just include a fancy dinner and gifts.
I'm a fan of trips for anniversaries. I went on an Alaskan cruise in 2011 and it was really cool, but it might be a little chilly in May (but you should go sometime)!
Four our 5 year anniversary we went to Vegas and caught a show and had some delicious food at Cut. This past anniversary we went to Los Olivos in CA and had a very lovely weekend. We always do something fun for our anniversaries, either a trip or just a really amazing dinner. For our 10 year anniversary we're planning on an amazing trip to somewhere (not sure where yet) for longer than a weekend. We spent our "honeymoon" moving cross country for work so we've not really had a grand trip, just a lot of fun little ones.

Our 5 year anniversary is this Friday, and we are going to Chicago. We plan to start TTC at the end of the year/beginning of next year, so this will likely be our last big vacation for a while. Hopefully every 5 years we can do a "big" vacation. Maybe Vegas/Grand Canyon for our 10th.
I vote trip. We didn't do anything for our 5th because the kids were teeny weeny at that point. Next year is our 10th in July and I have no clue where we are going, H wants to do a cruise. On Carnival. I shot that one down. "But it will be cheap!" Yeahno.
For 10...I dunno. Anniversaries for us usually consist of a nice dinner and usually a hotel stay somewhere.
This year we went to our local Zoo's fundraiser for dinner..it was SO awesome. I SAW A SLOTH! NOT BEHIND GLASS OR IN A CAGE! And I pet a Wallaby. AND Ticket price got you all the food and booze you could handle. Unfortunately, a major stomach virus the night before meant we barely ate or drank anything, but I'm already looking forward to next year.
I also got us a night at a local hotel, so it was a really nice "getaway" with a 15 minute drive home.

mandymay That's how we spent our honeymoon too! Driving in one car while my parents drove the other wasn't very romantic Hence the wanting to do something big.
