It turns out our cat is a really picky eater. Her usual food, California Natural, had a large recall that made it very hard to find locally. We bought some Wellness Core at the suggestion of the pet food store and also got a bunch of samples of other food. She refused to eat the Core beyond just a couple of pieces. She did eat one of the samples, Taste of the Wild, but she is now turning her nose up at that, too. She won't eat regular Wellness and she stopped eating Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul (ridiculous name) a few months ago. We can't feed her lower quality foods because something in them gives her gas and the runs. Am I missing a potential food? Do I just leave out one of the foods and wait her out? She won't let herself starve to death, will she?
I agree with Tamb about looking for something with similar ingredients. My dog loves his food, but if we give him the same brand in a different flavor he turns his nose up at it.
She liked the chicken and brown rice version of California Natural, but wouldn't touch the chicken and rice version of Wellness. I had previously tried Blue Buffalo before we got this picky cat and our cats at the time wouldn't eat it, so I haven't tried it yet. I think that's our next step. Has anyone tried Fromm cat food? We have a couple of samples, but I'm hesitant to start feeding something that's even harder to find locally.
We're actually open to grain free, which is why we tried Core. She gets the runs if she gets into her sister's Authority, which has corn and processed rice. She could also be sensitive to something else that we just haven't figured out yet. It's a good thing this cat is cute because she's a pain in the ass.
My previous cat refused all wet food with any beef/chicken products in it. My cat was a frekin' pescatarian! My philosophy was one can of wet food a day - whether you eat it or not. She'd food strike on the days I dared to offer a beef blend, but she didn't starve. She trained me to only buy the fish cans, obviously, but on the random day I bought the wrong thing, she'd just pass.
I say, stick with a brand that doesn't upset her system and she will get used to it. Eventually.
