I met someone yesterday who has twins (now grown) and didn't find out she was pregnant with two babies until she was something like 35 weeks along. She then said they were conceived 4 weeks apart!! I just smiled and said "oh wow", and excused myself. Lol

That is astounding that she actually believes that!!! I'd have a hard time not saying something, but I'm sure there'd be no convincing her that such a thing isn't possible!!

I know two women who have twins who are now in their 30s who didn't know there were two babies until they delivered. No ultrasounds and apparently the heartbeats were synchronized? I can't imagine what a shock that would be.

I think I've mentioned this, my folks didn't know they were having twins until after the doc delivered me. Nurse told the doc' she thought there was "another baby in there." Sure enough, my twin brother came next. Not like we were small - we were a combined 12 pounds 7 ounces of baby.
Immediately after DD was born, the nurse said, "there are two!" She was referring to loops of the umbilical cord around DD's neck.
I heard two and panicked that there was another baby on its way out. The nurse laughed, and then told me that it still actually happens more often than one would expect
She seemed crazy, so I doubt she was one of the rare cases that are legit - and wow, I had no idea this actually happens!
she only found out it was twins because her doctor kept getting on her for gaining so much weight and she was so upset she insisted on an ultrasound to check for twins. It was her second pregnancy, and I guess ultrasounds weren't routine in the 80s?
Ultrasounds were not routine in the 80s, I don't think my mom had one with me.
Agree...I had a (much younger) CW recently whose younger twin sisters were a delivery room surprise. Since she's SO much younger, I assumed that those types of surprises didn't happen as late as the 80s. Apparently, I was wrong!
And, thank you OP for reminding me of the Irish twin post from the old days!
My cousin's kids were born May 29 & April 12...less than one year apart.

I may have mentioned this before, but a coworker's kids were born January 2010, October 2011, September 2012. I cannot imagine. (My coworker is the dad. The mom stays at home.)
