i've been contemplating a table change lately since i couldn't find chairs i loved for my pedestal table. two years looking, time to give up. before the pedestal table, we had a pub table and we both love the height, but the square shape didn't work in our long, narrow kitchen. i found these retro inspired bar stool on thursday and convinced h that they would look sweet with a pub table. he wasn't in love with the stools, but totally on board with the table idea so we measured our space and drew up plans.
it isn't finished, but i'm really, really (really) impressed we actually created something functional and pretty. this is our first big building project. it still needs sanded and stained, and we need to figure out how we want to brace it from side to side to stop the slight sway. probably a footrest and diagonal bars to the underside of the top? going to look up some different plans this week and sort that out.
also, i'm not sure if the rug will stay or go. i love it, and it looked great under the pedestal table, but i'm not sure how i feel about it here. it might need to find a new place in our house.
eta: the green stamp you see on the end is intentional. this is wood that h milled at work and we plan to leave one stamp showing on each piece of furniture that we build.
mmm, i have a list of the few we liked (looked at the sample boards at HD), but i lost it. something on the darker side of medium. i have a few wooden items that are visible from the table and i want them to coordinate. they are all a medium with slight red-ish undertones. i'll probably leave out the red though.
i was going to start another thread and ask about stain brands since we've only tried staining once and it was a complete disaster (stain/poly in one and it was so sticky it wouldn't spread).
i feel like i have to add a hundred caveats with this picture too, haha. it looks all sad and inhumane to line people up and make them stare at a wall, but we never eat at the table with guests because we've never had more than 2 chairs (kitchen is too small!). h and i might eat here, but it will function more as a serving buffet when we have company, and because the chairs swivel someone can sit there and chat with me while i cook. it's not ideal in a real house, but it's really make the most out of our odd sized kitchen.
I am a big fan of General Finishes stains and finishes. I think I looked at their website online to see where to get it. I need to find a place here so that I can finish the furniture that I started refinishing before we moved.
