Some say to add soup, some don't. Some say to use mozzarella cheese, some say don't. But I've noticed they don't use very many spices, soooo, how do you make this flavorful without it just being bland burger and tater tots?
Do people add frozen vegetables, like corn and peas? Or would it be gross?
i'm a purist when it comes to this dish of goodness. chop up about 5 slices of bacon and cook till crisp. then brown a pound of ground beef, dump a can of cream of mushroom soup in with about 1/4 cup milk, stir the bacon in, and top with cheddar cheese and tots. bake for half an hour at 350 and WALLA! instant deliciousness.

I always used canned green beans (they're DH's fave) and I would use a mix of campbells cheese soup & campbells nacho cheese soup. But if you wanted to go all fancy and make a real cheese sauce with a roux, shredded cheese, etc. you could.

We call it hashbrown cassrole (I use shredded hashbrowns rather than tater tots). I would never put hamburger in it. I use soup, my recipe calls for sour cream. I use shredded cheddar cheese and double the amount, we like it cheesy and doubling the amount does not make it too cheesy. I use salt and pepper and my recipe has onions so that the combination gives it flavor.

this is not comparable to tater tot casserole. it sounds tasty too, and i'd eat platefuls of it, but...apples and oranges, yo.

It doesn't sound like yours is Tator tot casserole at all then.

My grandma makes this, it's amazing.
It's soup, sour cream, shredded hashbrowns, and cheese with cornflakes mixed with melted butter on the top. It's heaven, mmm.
I didn't have soup, I made a roux with beef broth, milk, and onions. I mixed corn and peas with my beef, poured over my white sauce, topped with some cheese, put tater tots on top, and I'll add more cheese later.

My recipe is similar to Wan's. I use a couple of pieces of bacon cut up and brown the hamburger. I usually brown the hamburger with onions. Then I add cream of chicken soup and a can of milk. I cook that in with the hamburger and bacon to get the lumps out of the soup. I also add frozen corn. After the lumps are all cooked out of the soup, I put it in a baking pan and then add the tots on top (usually most of a bag) and bake at 350 degrees for 45-60 mins so the tots get nice and crunchy.
I say, add whatever you want to it. It's a hot dish. That's what they are for. I don't always use bacon, but you asked for our best recipe. Sometimes I will use cheese soup instead of cream of chicken. Also, where I am from, it is traditional to put green beans in tater tot hot dish. I think you can use either frozen or canned veggies, but if you use canned, I would not add the liquid from the can. I think that would make the hot dish kind of runny after it is cooked (although, I don't know for sure. It is just a hunch I have).

This is Cheesy Potatoes!
Do you live in the South? I have been making Cheesy Potatoes for years, and now my SIL (in the South) has decided she will re-brand it as "Hashbrown Casserole" and I'm all "WTF are you doing here?!"
I saute some choppped onions, then add in the ground beef along with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and some paprika. After the meat is browned I mix in a can of cream of mushroom soup and some frozen green beans. Put it all in a casserole dish, top with cheese, top with tater tots, and then add some additional cheese on top.
