I'm a newbie to this board. I lost a bunch of weight two years ago, gained it back over the course of this year, and would like to get rid of it again. I'm having a hard time finding motivation. I've started doing a few work outs that I pulled from Self and/or Shape. I've been contemplating getting a subscription. What say you experts on their helpfulness? If you recommend them, which is your favorite? Thank you in advance for your help.
I can't speak to those workouts specifically, but I will say that the most important component of weight loss will be your diet. Don't forget to pay attention to that!
I am not a big fan of the magazine workouts, at least not the way they are presented - in a vacuum. I have personally found fitness success (however you may define that) by having a more specific plan. I've used the New Rules of Lifting for weight training because the workout program is more structured than random magazine workouts. I've worked with a personal trainer for the same reason. This year I have a triathlon coach for the first time in ten years. Having the structure a big picture plan helps me.
Also, consistency. If you are just doing a random magazine workout once or twice a week, you probably aren't going to see the results you are hoping for. Use them to build yourself some sort of routine.
I have a subscription to Self that was free when I signed up for a race last year. It's a decent magazine when you take it for what it's worth, and I read it when it comes, but then typically never pick it up again after.
It has a few parts that I like - there is usually a section that has some well known chefs that do healthy takes on a non-healthy dish or ingredient. I have taken a couple of the exercises and incorperated them into my routine - the one with Kelly Osborn on the cover had some pretty good ab exercises in it.
Would I pay for a subscription though? No, probably not.
I've read Women's Health at a friends house a bunch of times and I find that magazine to be really redundant through out the issues, and if I read one more article in there about how vodka is a better choice than beer I'll probably freak out and burn the magazine. I get it, I need to lay off the beer. Sheesh.
I'm just not a fan of most of them. They're typically very low-fat centric and the workouts are very Gwyneth-esque with women dancing around with 2lb dumbbells. Just not my style.
However, Women's Health is one of my go to rags for bath time!

These are my feelings as well. I also feel most women's magazines - health or not - are just recycled content over and over.
Women's/Men's health have decent workouts. I have a Men's Health workout I've done a few times that I like. It's the Spartacus workout. If you google it, it will bring up a PDF.

I had a subscription to Self at one point and gave it up after a year. Mainly, I got bored with it. Also, if you check their websites, most of the workouts/recipes are posted on there for free, or you can sign up (also free) for some of the other content. I say save your money!
