I've never been either. I guess piers are t really my thing. I accidentally called a pier a boardwalk today at Ballast Point and H pointed out that the difference between a pier and a boardwalk is a boardwalk runs parallel to the shore and a pier is perpendicular. I'm much too old to have needed that explained to me.

I'd never really thought out that distinction before either and probably would have mixed them up too.
I went to eat at the Columbia there two years ago with visiting family. I was embarrassed. The pier and whole structure were shitty. I am glad it is going, too.

I have really mixed emotions.
I grew up in St. Pete. On weekends, the pier had lots of free events for families, so we were always down there. In high school, they even had karaoke on Friday nights and I'd go with my friends and my parents. Spent many 4th of Julys there. I had engagement photos done downtown, and the pier was in the background for quite a few. And I also had my rehearsal dinner at The Columbia. Such nice memories.
That being said, I agree that the space was definitely not being used to it's full potential. A lot of times, it was a ghost town. I have seen information and photos of the new pier, The Lens, and it is spectacular! I am keeping my fingers crossed that it goes well for the city. I love St. Pete.
I never did much with it until we had our rehearsal dinner at the Columbia inside it. I don't know anyone who doesn't agree that it's tacky looking. But I've never minded it that much. I'm just indifferent-- I don't really care whether they were to tear it down or not, lol.
I'm just tired of the misinformation. People seem to think that if they vote down the Lens, then they will "save" the pier. The pier is being torn down regardless.
