I know people who side-eye those who purchase iPods/iPads for their children. These same people call themselves being frugal by purchasing crappy versions of the same products (no-name tablets) and then they get upset when the tablets can't really be used for anything. I also know people who shame the "apple kids" but they have Nintendo DS and a bazillion game cartridges. Ummm hello! Which is more expensive?
I've seen a lot of people side eyeing on these boards because I think they're assuming that if the kid has his own ipad, he or she's getting tons of screen time.
I didn't know there were specifically anti-Apple parents out there. What a weird thing to spaz over.
They are not necessarily anti-apple, as many of them have apple devices for themselves, they just think it is somehow over the top for a child to have a name brand device. It is so fucking stupid.

Yeah. I don't get it. Our next luxury purchase for Henry will be his own ipad. Or just another ipad, and he can have ours. Mama doesn't want to share anymore. lol.

I don't think it's necessarily that they're anti kids having a brand name device, at least for me, that's not it. It's that an iPad is SO much more expensive than the cheaper tablets out there. Even the cheapest one, the 16GB ipad mini is $329. The 16gb ipad 2 is $399 and the 16gb new ipad is $499. I can't even bring myself to pay that much for myself and I love my iphone and my imac at work. DS and I each have a nook tablet and they work fine for us, for now.
I guess I do think it is a bit silly to spend that much on what is essentially a toy for your toddler, but most likely I'm just jealous because I can't afford one for myself
We got SD a Kindle Fire, she bought herself an iPhone. DH and I don't own apple products. We are anti-Apple but I don't judge other parents if they do.
TBH, I don't even judge other parents arrangements with screen time, maybe this is flameworthy.
My H is such an Apple guy that it's not a question of if but when our kids will have iPads. I didn't realize I might be judged over this. Oh well, add it to the list!
I get it a lot, my 3 year old has special needs, and uses his ipad for communication. He also has a special speech device that is a galaxy note, its not open device, and runs his text to speech but you can not tell. I get the comments, looks, but I just let it go. I would rather my dd be able to tell me what he wants, but for now he has to use a stupidly expensive tablet.
They think the ipad is the expensive item, when the note cost almost 4 times what we paid because of the program written for it.

I'm anti-apple because I think they're a pain in the ass and a racket, and they were straight up dicks to my sister when someone used her itunes account to commit identity theft, but not because I think its somehow spoiling a kid if they have an apple tablet or phone vs. a non-apple one. Folks are weird.
Omg am I going to have to buy my kid one of these someday? We have a family ipad and a nice computer. Is it a normal thing for people to buy their young (ish) kid's these electronics?

I agree with nahoku. I mean, I WISH we could buy both of our kids iPads! But we can't LOL. And honestly, it does seem pretty silly (IMO) for a 2 year old to have a $700 electronic device. I mean, if you can afford it, then whatever. It just seems so over the top to me. I also think it's different when kids get hand-me-down ipads/ipods.
I'm hoping to avoid buying my kid her own phone (of any sort) or Ipad or computer until she's at least in middle school. I also don't anticipate any sort of game system in our future and she won't have her own TV. But that is more of a "hey! let's color and run outside!" bias. Not a brand name thing.
I think there is more judging of parents who don't buy their kids all this stuff. I want him to have something when he's a little older but I feel it's unnecessary for him now at less than 3 years old. People act like he's deprived!
(i don't like apple and won't buy those specific products. but if you're an apple family why wouldn't you just get everyone the same thing?)

LOl this is where I am at. But I don't have a kid in school yet. I acknowledge that I error on the side of old fashion when it comes to this stuff. Plus you know I am poor so I have that going for me as well.
Is this a requirement for school? Or just something nice people like to buy their kids?
Please tell me it isn't a requirement for school. I am already stressed today about why we thought we could afford these two children lol.

Yeah, we won't be buying any video games either. I'm sure this will be another unpopular decision!

Yup. We get judged all the time. A is allowed 30 min a day of iPad time. She doesn't always use it. She is allowed to read or play games. You would think she stayed on it all day, if you talked to my ILs

Its not a requirement but "EVERYONE has a phone in 3rd grade and I'm a FOURTH grader. its EMBARRASSING!". Then Christmas comes, what do we get SD? Womp wommmmp and then we are suckers. That's how it happened in our house.

We aren't required to own a computer, but it is expected to have access. Allie had email assignments and mini reports due in kindergarten. They make it damn near impossible not not own one.
I actually thought about buying an iPad mini for my DD. but then my DH reminded me that she is 6 months old and he doesn't even have one. So I think that when she is older I will just giver her mine and get myself a new one.
She really enjoys this fisher price game where you touch the screen and a giggling shape appears and laughs. Or the paint sparkle app. Those will keep her amused for a long time.

My kid is constantly being for my phone and Kindle already. We might get her a Leap Pad, but I'm leaning towards an iPad so we can get whatever apps we want and not have to worry about depending on the Leap Pad software.

I'm just going to say it. THAT'S CRAZY! A 6 month old (etc) would have just as much fun, or more, with a cardboard box or a spoon.
