no really. I hate that I'm required to eat. I feel like I'm basically force feeding myself every day.
This is only b/c I'm choosing not to eat junk. I could eat junk all day long dot com. ha
I just hate having to think about it and plan out what I'm going to eat... and having to eat when I'm not even remotely hungry b/c it's the 'right thing' to do.
So. Help me.
At 6:30 pm, I will be taken to hell by an extremely tough boxing coach. She's an animal you guys. It's crazy. and she's like fucking tiny too! She isn't bulky in the least, but her body is 100% rock solid. amazing!
I need to start figuring out what and when to eat before I go... and what to eat after I'm done.
Can you throw out some ideas of the most basic food? If it takes a lot of effort or has too many ingredients, I won't do it. I know myself. lol
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
while you're doing that, I'll write a story about Tuesday... check back if you care.
I'm the smallest person in class (re: height, weight and strength)... She asked us all why we were there and everyone wanted to lose weight. When she came to me, I said "I'm the weakest person I know".
She was talking about how we were all going to lose weight over the next 8 weeks, but then stopped and said to me - "well, not you - you're going to gain weight." lol.
When it came time to order equipment, she wrote down 16 oz gloves for me. I said "so, um, are those the lightest ones." she said no. I asked if she was sure I shouldn't get the lightest ones. she said "well, I can order you those if you want, but you said you wanted to get stronger. If you actually meant it, don't try to make it as easy as possible. Commit to your goal and push yourself. I'm going to help you and I'll never ask for more than I know you can give me."
This bitch is going to kill me you guys. lol. I'm seriously afraid.
You definitely can eat protein before you work out, but you get much more benefit from eating it after. Before you work out, carbs will give you more energy to get through your workout. (Add some fat to give it more staying power.) After you work out, you want carbs + protein. The carbs help raise your blood sugar, causing your body to produce insulin, which is great at transporting protein to your muscles. Chocolate milk is a great post-workout food, actually.
Protein shake afterwards. Buy some flavored whey protein. you can either just mix it with milk or make a smoothie. I always make a smoothie with milk, ice, fruit of some sort, spinach and protein.
Protein is essential after a work out. You need to feed your muscles.
Bamker-I carb it up. Like a half bagel with string cheese perhaps. Light enough that it doesn't feel like a brick in your stomach but enough to give you some energy.
Or I eat one of those mini cliff energy bar things.
Don't eat anything closer than 2 hours before your workout, especially at the beginning. Having stuff in your stomach can kick up the acid and lead to heartburn/nausea. Also, make sure you drink enough water during the workout.
Oh, and have fun. Boxing is HARD, but it's an incredible workout. You're going to be just like Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby, except with (SPOILER ALERT) less dying!
bluelily - can you give me an example of a high carb + fat food?
French fries? A milk shake? (Okay, maybe not.) Protein and fat both work to stretch out the absorption of carbs by your body, preventing that carb spike and drop. So either of those would work.
Honestly, when I was working out really hard, I'd eat a Luna bar before my workout, and either a Luna bar or some chocolate milk after. I was trying to lose weight, which isn't your goal, so I worked myself down to eating half a Luna bar before and half a Luna bar after. For me, I got the best results when I wasn't overfull or starving during my workout. So think along those lines. A salad with chicken and dressing. A small baked potato with a little butter and cheese. Some avocado and tomato salad. Whatever works for you and fits into the kinds of foods you're trying to eat. But don't be afraid to eat fats as you're trying to get stronger. Fats are actually really good for your body* - they're just calorically dense. That works against a lot of us, but it works in your favor.
* with the possible exception of saturated fats and the definite exception of trans-fats

Yup, you are going to puke after the class. Seriously. I remember my first few classes, and it was not even as intense as yours sounds and I seriously thought I was going to puke. I either had to walk on a treadmill and sip water, or sit in my car and sip water. My legs shook and I felt like death, but it was fucking awesome!!! I'm so jealous!!!

Protein after a workout is to help repair muscle. You just want to make sure you're not easting too much because then your body is just burning it as fuel.
Before you workout, you want a mix of complex and simple carbs. Think a banana with whole wheat toast or an apple with peanut butter. Or Greek yogurt with honey. But remember that a little goes a long way - you don't need an entire meal before you go.
After you work out, think protein (chicken, eggs, 4OZ red meat, fatty fish like salmon), veggies and good fats (EVOO, avocado, nuts).
I eat paleo now, which is a debatable lifestyle choice, but the fundamentals are similar.

Tip, when you get a water break, don't chug it!!
Yep! And don't drink it ice cold. Your body has to heat it up to room temp to absorb it. More water in your stomach, more jumping around, more chance to vom in front of the hot dudes with their shirts off.

I try to drink a lot of water when I'll be working out later in the day. If it's a big workout I try to eat a snack about 1-2 hours before. I really like clif bars for something easy that I can eat at my desk.
I have a protein shake after I work out. I like the Syntrax Nectar flavors. Usually I can't eat real food for awhile after a workout, so that definitely helps.
I agree with drinking more water before you work out, too. I work out mornings, and I feel better days when I force myself to drink a glass of water before working out. It's not good for your body if you're dehydrated and sweating.
