Is it customary to give "thank you" gifts at or after closing? I feel like our attorney is getting quite a bit of money, but I wouldn't mind giving her a little thank you. I'd rather not give our REA anything, but if I give to one...I'll give to the other.
If this IS something that's done...what do you give??
I don't think a gift is customary in either case. A gift for an REA is referrals, but don't give those out unless you actually liked her/him. I like pp's idea of a bottle of wine for your attorney.
The REA gets a big check so that is plenty. Unless they did an exceptional job, I would not give them anything. Our REA's (two houses) have given US small presents.
I guess the process here is different because I have purchased two houses and never had an individual attorney. The only attorneys we met were at closing.
It's not customary in my area. A small token would be fine if you think they went above and beyond, but they're being paid to work for you and help you through the process. It's their job.
Our REA told us that a referral is the best thing she could ask for - so if your REA or attorney did an exceptionally good job, send friends/family her way and help her build a client base.
