Ditto Dick. They are beautiful but it is still the cold pacific. You are up north so Marin or Sonoma coast beaches are your best bet.
- The drive to Stinson is insanely crowded on a good weekend so go on a weekday, especially if it is a Mountain Play day. (The traffic spills out and makes driving anywhere in Mill Valley annoying).
- Point Reyes has pretty beaches.
- Rodeo beach is easiest to get to from 101 (tucked behind the GGB in the Headlands below the old nike missile base). The setting is wonderful. The beach itself is smaller and rougher sand than some others.
- Muir beach will be closed much of this summer.
- We like to stroller "hike" out tennessee valley to that little beach but it is more for the walk than the beach itself (which is small but fine with but rougher sand).
I was just at Pescadero state beach Memorial Day weekend and thought it was really nice. It had picnic tables and grills and the sand was smooth and the beach was long with not alot of seaweed. In fact there were several beaches near it that were decent. They are all south of half moon bay and north of Santa Cruz along HW1.
You could drive down to Santa Cruz if you wanted to get in the water and enjoy boardwalk cheesiness.
I live in Santa Cruz.....stay away from Cowell's Beach. It's located next to the wharf. Bums and tweakers drop their needles in the sand and the sewage levels are always super high. It's a toxic dump of a beach that many out of towners don't realize how gross it is. A young boy just got stuck with a syringe a couple weeks ago while there.

oh eww, thanks for the heads up.
Eww! We're heading to Santa Cruz this weekend. I'll need to double check where exactly we're going...
