Pros to my current one: -I like the way she cuts/colors my hair. -She is very inexpensive (like half of what most people pay for a cut and color). -She is the sister of a close friend of mine, so I know her and genuinely like her.
Cons: -She is inexpensive because she has no overhead and it's all very no frills - she rents a chair in a barber shop a few nights a week (separate room from where all the dudes get their hair cut). It's dirty, smells like smoke and one time I had to go to the bathroom there and vowed to just hold it if I ever had to pee again. Not a pleasant experience. -It's difficult to schedule with her. The best way to communicate with her is via text (I've tried phone, email and facebook, and text yields the best response). But she takes anywhere from a few days to a week to get back to me and sometimes requires follow-up texts just to schedule an appointment. It's annoying. -If I ditch her, I'll still see her often at my friend's house, so that would be awkward.
Obviously I'd have to pay more if I switch to a legit salon, and I go about once every 8 weeks because of the greys. I have no one else in mind so I'd have to ask around and find someone else. What would you do?
If I my hair guy was this difficult I'd stay with him because I really, really love him and he does an awesome job with my hair. So I'd stick with mine.
I left a good stylist once because she was just too hard to get an appt with. It wasn't a matter of contacting her - she was just SOOOO booked, it was hard to find a time.
If you like your hair it is worth the inconvenience. My stylist left his salon in Beverly Hills when he broke up with one of the other stylists there and went to the brand's training salon in west la. I hate going there because it is not a pampering experience at all but he is good and cheaper now so I do it.
I changes stylists because she was difficult to work with. She did great cut and color, but she was flakey. She worked really slowly (cut, touch up and highlights with her took 4-5 hours) and always ran late as the result of poor booking. The final blow was once when she missed an appointment because she went out to buy a car and "it took all day". WTF?
I really needed to get my hair done, so I went with her shampoo person who was a recent beauty school grade. She's not quite as good, but I'm not turning up on any magazine covers anytime soon so it's not a huge deal. I stayed with her until she had kids and cut back her schedule- she turfed me to a friend who is almost as good as the first one. The new stylist's availability is more limited so I often switch between the two.
I was going to suggest this. Next time you're there with her in person, book your next appointments.
I try, but she usually likes to wait because the nights she works change, depending on her husband's work schedule. So she's usually not okay to book eight weeks out. It's been a while since I've asked though, so maybe I'll try again at my next appointment.
