I was at a conference in Chicago over the weekend and had some free time Sunday afternoon and heard there was a lit fest going on. Because it was last minute I didn't get to go to any of the events that needed free tickets, but there was a lot going on in the main area and open tents.
There were a lot of vendors selling books and I got to put my paws on a 400 year old book that was just sitting out there for sale. It was some type of Hebrew dictionary and I had no idea what any of it said, but it was gorgeous and in amazing shape considering the age. There were small publishers selling books and it was nice to see a lot of smaller publishers and individuals selling their books rather than it being overrun with big name books.
I got to hear some short stories read and listened in on a panel discussion by YA authors. While I'm not super into YA, the conversation at the point I popped in was about the lasting power of books (with a focus on YA) and also what the authors on the panel were reading when they were in the traditional YA age range. It was interesting to hear 3 of the 4 list horror authors and only one list a dystopian novel.
All in all it was fantastic and I was so excited to be able to stop by and check it out. The best part was that the vendor area was set up like an L down two streets. When I got to the end I ran into a yarn shop. I had been hoping to pop into one while I was in Chicago, but didn't think I was going to have time. It was an amazing hobby twofer.
