honestly, i don't see you doing anything under 3k sqft with kids.
i didn't pay a ton of attention to the first since its under contract, but the second is so close to other homes...is it a townhouse type of structure?
and the third has 2 acres...i assume you'd hire someone to do your lawn? we have 1.25 acres and its so much to keep up with.
Sarah- we have bought a new house every two years since we were married, so I wouldn't think we will live in it for long with kids. In our community rent exceeds the cost of mortgage, and you have to live in a home for 2 years before you can rent it, so . . . We'll trade up once there are kids. And we could do one child in House 3, since (despite its size) there's a separate floor for the nanny.
They are all SFH, none is 2 acres. The community is maybe 2 acres. That's what they have to be referring to. The yard is the size of a postage stamp.

Are the people who are saying 2,000 sq ft is too small joking?
This makes me want to weep. We are house hunting right now and our budget is much smaller than elle's. 2,000 sq ft here is a pipe dream unless we move wayyyy out in BFE or win the lottery.

I know, really. I'm so jealous of Elle and anyone else who can afford one million dollar homes. BUT, I also don't want to go to school to get the education Elle did nor do her job. So that's the trade off, lol.
Around here, a 2,000 sq ft home is like $300,000. Our house is only 1,300sq ft and though we wish we had one more bedroom, we still don't use the entire house.

Both H and I have advanced degrees, but although we fall into the upper middle class category, we will never ever make that kind of money due to our chosen professions.
I'm okay with that, really. But up here $300,000 will get you a 1,300 square foot house with 2 br, 1.5 baths, no central air and a bunch of lead paint. Or maybe 3 br and 1,800 sq ft, but you're on a busy road and have an hour and a half commute each way. And the nicer homes are often going for 20 - 30 K over list.
House hunting on a tight budget sucks. I am envious of the ability to house hunt like elle.

#1, then #2 could be made nicer. Dislike #3 altogether.
I would wait for something more like #1 to come up and then jump on it.
If you build would you buy off a plan or start from scratch with a lot and an architect? I would love to do the latter, but it's a full time job building a totally custom house. Off plan is much easier but would really frustrate me. Allowances are a nightmare to deal with if you want to pick something non standard.

Yeah we just bought our " forever home" for 376k. It's 2400 square feet, and has 4 beds 2.5 baths, central air on half an acre. We are turning the lower level into an inlaw for my mom, so we will have 1900 square feet 3 beds 2 full baths for us. We had to make some compromises though. It has central ac but no real family room, or garage. We can eventually add those on, our new neighbors did, but it will be $$$. I thought Elle had like 3 kids for done reason ( idk why???) so 1900 square feet in a million dollar home seemed ridiculous.

We are paying to live at the beach. Even in LA there are a lot of places where $1.5M would buy a big house, but DH and I are beach people and the neighborhoods we like are expensive. I don't think there is much point talking about the prices because we all have different priorities. For me, being able to take the dogs to the beach or go for a run on the beach whenever I want trumps having lots of land. We own 2 acres in the country, too, so it is not like we are unaware of the joy of paying $200K for lots of space, we just don't want to live there.
We are going to open houses today. I think we are going to end up with something that's already built because we want to stay in this community and the new constructions are further from the ocean. I actually like they are in the third house the best, but I do think the first house is in the best location.

Oh, and I have two dogs. No human children.
Yeah it's totally worth whatever you have to pay to live on the ocean. DH & I went to college blocks from the beach. It was heaven.
I'm not absolutely in love with any, but 3 appeals to me most. However, I think you'd be happier with the size of 1, especially with the dogs and future child[ren].

Well, I like 3 the most too, and I won't buy based on future kids because I figure, when we have them and need more space, we can move. These aren't houses we will invest in because you just can't . . . Beyond limited internal upgrades, there is a limit.
I like #2 the best. It's stunning from the outside! I don't love everything about the inside, but you can always personalize it to make it yours. But overall, it's nice and it has wonderful front and back yards.
