They can do a one time of 10 months, which I think a lot choose this route but the problem is you can't have anything like a job or university lined up because you must give almost a year. The other option is 5 months + 5 years of 3 weeks, this is what DH did. He's in his 3rd year of 5 weeks, he skipped the first two years because of work and university (but 2x out is the max, he can't skip anymore).
There's also the social service route, I'm not sure how it works really. DH's brother is doing this and has worked in a nursing home for nearly a year, I think he still has another year to go.
It's always for three weeks, though I think there's an option that you can finish quicker if you want to buy doing 2-3 months.
Weeekends aren't for sure. DH has them off this year, but the past two year he had "missions" that didn't allow for weekends off (He is in the motorbike division and the had to blockade roads for the Tour de Suisse and for a gymanstic competition in Lausanne). Some of the new guys in his group though have to stay on the weekends for "guard duty".

I admit I don't know much about the system at all, but because DH is an officer he has to go for a few more years. He's 31 now and still has 2 or three left. If he weren't an officer he'd have been done a while ago.

How is it decided who gets to go to the Vatican and protect the Pope and keep the tourists quiet in the Sistine Chapel? Is it servicemen that are in the Army for the long haul or do those with short stints (10 months) get sent out of country? Just curious as I think working at the Vatican would be very interesting!
switzerland and swissmama? I thought you two were the same! Are you both in Zurich??
The Vatican guards are boys in the Army who are Catholic and not married, maybe under 26 too (not 100% positive on this). It's a 2 year commitement. DH was asked to do it, but declined.
