Ugh. I fell asleep on the couch that night, slept right through it. Woke up to no power and trees/debris all the hell over the yard. Another weird thing is that the next day was gorgeous. I sat in my neighbor's pool all day, then went home to a sweltering house. There was a weird stillness in the air, and just the sound of generators in the background. Weird to not have power and no snow, too.
I remember hearing the thunder last year, thinking it was my dog barking and being so pissed bc I thought he was going to wake my 7 week old and WHY WOULDN'T H SHUT HIM UP.
He kept sleeping though. Ha.
That was it. No other damage etc. I don't think we will be so lucky this time around if it gets that bad.
I'll never forget that sound, I thought it was a tornado for real. It sounded like a freight train barreling down on my house. We were staying at an extended stay/condo while our house was being built. We were out there for 5 days and our daycare out for longer. It sucked so bad... Thankfully our new house was under roof. Our neighbors were just beginning framing and their house was in pieces. It looked like someone had stepped on a toy house.
I am freaking out. We were out 8 days last year. It was horrible. I'm hoping that with all the trimming, Sandy prep, and now we have an idea of what the heck a derecho means, we'll get nothing. let's hope. Derecho is a bad bad word in my house...
Ditto, we were out of power for 7 days, electric stove, in the 90's and higher. It was hell.
It is supposed to hit us this evening. Hail too. Yay! I guess I should shove some stuff out of the way and fit at least one of the cars in the garage. Luckily we moved to a neighborhood with buried power lines so we should be ok, although the rest of our town will be screwed.
Still waiting for the storm in Chicago. Its been dark for an hour and I can hear the thunder, but its really high up. I cancelled my run but now looks like I could have headed out and been back already.
They said 2+ inches of rain already in Western Chicago burbs. Predicting 5 inches by the time its done. Hope that isn't right.
Thankful to live in the city - we rarely lose power (knock on wood) and I live on the 3rd floor.
The Capital Weather Gang has not told me to panic, so I'm good.
Both H and I were out of the country for the last one though (and our house never lost power--lots of our friends ended up squatting there for a week while we were gone).

THey did say it will be serious!!
Well which one! Should I be worried? I have a flight out on Friday, will I be able to take it?
ETA: I just looked...looks like any issues will be tomorrow, so I guess that's good.
I remember last years storm, but vaguely. We were in the hospital with DS for emergency MRSA related surgery, so we had power the whole time. The entire surrounding area was knocked out, except for our house.

I was in DC last year through that fucker in JULY. I slept(no I didn't cause it was hot as hell) on my inlays couch, downstairs for two nights. The power came back on as soon as I got on a flight to Atlanta. My prayers are with you guys.
I'm glad I found this post. I didn't really take the facebook posts seriously and this prompted me to go and read weather.com.
We have full tanks of gas, I just brought in all the deck furniture and I'm hunting up batteries and candles. Dear Storm, please don't take our power. Thanks! Love Baltimore.

I am on the border of purple, but am supposed to drive into the office tomorrow which is smack inside the purple (and far away from home). I just missed the tornado in Newark, DE on Monday by a few minutes (I was about a mile away on I 95 when I got the alert) so I'm sort of freaked out about driving into that area tomorrow.
I sent dh out to fill the two cars while I got LT ready for bed. We didn't lose power last year (we did for an hour, I guess, but we were on a flight home from vacation so who cares). If we lose power this year, I am outta here (hotel or whatever) as I don't do well in hot hot. I am working from home for the bulk of the day as MD turns into the land of ineptness with just a sprinkle when it comes to driving.

Ok, so I read this and thought WTF? There's apparently a meetup tomorrow at a mexican restaurant called Derecho? I want pics!

For serious, though, people here are going a little nutty about moving their furniture and shit in. I care not one bit.
Edited: this makes me sound like a total dick. People here always freak out about some weather occurrence or another and it's never as apolcalytic as we anticipate so I've quit caring. But that's here. Where nothing happens. Aside from river valley snow.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."
Well, it hit Chicago and it's gone. A whole lot of nothing in the city. Thundered for about an hour. Not much lightning - the storm was very high up. Rained for maybe 15 minutes total over the last 2+ hours. 15 seconds of hail and that's it. No 80mph winds. No golfball sized hail.
I can't speak about the burbs but yeah in the city - meh. A lot of freakout for a lot of nothing.

I can't tell you how many times they call for a big storm and nothing happens.
Our town was hit pretty bad last year. Before we could even decide whether to go into the cellar or not the storm had already passed. It was probably less than 5 minutes. The wind made the rain go completely sideways. We didn't have power for about a week. There were trees and lines down and our deadend road wasn't cleared for a few days. Also the power knocked out the cell phone towers too, so we couldn't call out on our home phone or cell phone.
The damage was unlike anything I've ever seen before. It took the steeple right off of the local church.
The gas stations were a huge problem since very few were open, so I would fill up. Also some stores and food trucks started operating cash only, so I always make sure to keep a little cash on hand. Also if the power goes out and you have a fridge with the ice maker on the door, make sure the dump the ice maker. Ours melted and water got into the motor and ruined it. Take pictures of all damage for the insurance company. I was even able to include food loss on our claim.
I'm sticking with Capital Weather Gang, but this is their last chance with me after effing up the 'huge snowstorm' in March which was nothing. We got an email reminder of how our school district handles emergency alerts and such, so some people were hoping for school to be cancelled tomorrow. I highly doubt that will happen unless power goes out overnight. We cancelled our Field Day that was supposed to be tomorrow. I think depending on how it all develops it could be an early release, but I suppose we shall see...
Justin Berk just said it's not going to be a derecho.
Hasn't said anything about tornados, though.
ETA: He just posted this:
8:10 am **Large HAIL heading towards New Windsor, Westminster. **Warning until 8:45 fr Carroll, Baltimore (north of the city), and Harford Counties** This storm is over performing! I know I mentioned weakening this am- this enhanced from southeast wind. Models didn't support this but local climatology does. I'm off the models and straight nowcasting for the day.
Last night was fucking weird in Cleveland. I'm a few blocks from the lake and we had 2 tornado warnings overnight, yet it never rained or got windy. Yet there were funnel clouds and water spouts over the water and the lighting was insane. The storm just never came in from the lake.
