We've deep, rumbling thunder for hours, and the rain just started. I'm totally giving my roof the hairy eyeball because it had better not leak or I will hurt it.
ETA: I know I'm not the only one who is going to keep her phone plugged in all day in case the power goes out. You can take my refrigerated food and A/C but you'll never take my interweeeeeeeeebs!

It is raining here in Arlington, but they said it is going to just be normal storms in the morning. Then in the evening is when the bad weather is going to hit.

Thanks for reminding me! I thought of that last night but in the normal chaos of the morning forgot. Plugging in now....

Oh god. I forgot to charge my phone last night and do not have a charger with me.
If it makes you feel any better, they were calling for dangerous storms for my area yesterday afternoon and evening. The sun never went away, and it did not storm one iota. So maybe the same will happen for you? We can hope.
I still don't really understand the concept of a derecho. Yes, I read about it on Wiki but I still don't get it.
All I know is, derecho or not, I fucking hate wearing my rainboots now because my legs have gotten fatter and so my rainboots are practically cutting off my circulation. But I don't think I can get away with wearing my flip-flops for this much rain.
Last year's derecho was crazy. I mean CRAZY. It was totally calm, and I was in bed, but I kept hearing this noise like thunder. I thought, that's weird, it's can't be thunder. So I looked at the weather on my phone and it was just this LINE of red.
Actually it looked like this:
So I went downstairs to tell H and as soon as we went over to the window, the wind started blowing like crazy, out of nowhere. Huge gusts. Then it started raining. I said, "We'd better get the flashlights out" and literally one minute later, the power went out.
We sat in the front room of the house on the sofa looking out the window and watching the storm. It was the most bizarre storm I have ever experienced. The wind was incredible, and the sound of thunder was just like a long, continuous sound. It wasn't like THUNDERCLAP........silence.........THUNDERCLAP..... it was just a long, constant rumble. And the lighting was the same - it looked like a light show. THere was a constant faint light in the sky and one lightning strike after another, almost instantly. The rain was going sideways, the wind was so strong. It was just incredible. Crap from way down the street was being blown across our yard and it just kept going.
And of course, our power was out for days and the heat was unbearable - it got up to 88 degrees inside the house and that was on the main level. We couldn't even go upstairs, it was so hot. Which was super fun with a 3 year old and a four month old.
It also hit the day before our yard sale, which we thought was going to be awful, but it turned out great. Apparently since the power was out, people had nothing better to do than to come to our garage sale so we ended up selling nearly everything.
You must not be from hurricane land. Why were you in front of a window?!
That reminds me of my mom when Wilma hit. She started ironing at like 4am because she assumed they'd lose power. So, she stands in front of the window, shrieking as stuff flies by. But continues ironing because when people are without power for 2 weeks they really care that they have wrinkled shorts.

I feel like we had this conversation last year when the derecho struck, but I totally get this level of compulsiveness and would do this, except it would be something other than ironing because I don't iron anything ever. Today I ran to get gas at 6:30am, and I'm running the dishwasher and doing the laundry early, just in case. Also, my phone will be plugged in all day. I'm basically assuming the world will never be the same again ever and we're all going to be living Revolution-style, albeit stinkier and with operational mobile phones.
It's pretty nice here in Alexandria at the moment but I heard it was getting bad in Fredericksburg. It looks like its coming our way ... Capital Wearther Gang has the storm in western Loudon at the moment. Just hope I can get home from work ok! I live only about 4 miles away but it's on a busy road and people suck at driving.
I just need it to stay nice In D.C. until 6. I don't drive to work, but I don't feel like walking the three blocks from the Metro to my house in a downpour. I already got drenched Monday, and once in a week is PLENTY!
