Is this a new thing? My H and my ILs swear they have never heard of it before. I don't care if he does it either way, but I thought it was kind of a standard new dad thing to cut the umbilical cord.
DH cut all three and told me it was pretty cool, kind of squicky though, lol I don't know how, seeing as he watched all three come out, and the placentas too (which fascinated him) and he had no problem with that.

I thought basically everyone (unless it was an emergency) had the option to do this. My dad cut at least 1 of my siblings cords back in the 80s. DH cut DD1's and will cut DD2's.

The intern was so stunned when my daughter was born that he turned to pass her off to the nurses before the cutting happened. The cord snapped in half.
H said, "Guess I'm not cutting it." He may have done some ceremonial trimming after the fact. My memory is hazy.

I thought it was common as well, and I didn't even think some dads wouldn't want to! DH was all about that. He did decline to touch the placenta, ha ha. He held the bebe. I touched.

I'm pretty sure my dad cut my cord in the 70's! Not a new thing :-)
With Abigail the cord was apparently pretty tight around her neck, so my doctor cut it immediately. With Anna, DH got to cut it. He also commented that it was really hard to cut!
I checked out the placenta both times. I was fascinated. I didn't touch it -- it didn't occur to me. I probably would have if it were offered :-)

DH was insistent on cutting the cord. I think he wanted to feel like he had contributed in some small way, lol. Same way he talks up his "awesome" birth coaching skills whenever the subject of my labor with DS comes up. I'm more like, "Yeah, you were pretty good with that damp cloth ... but remember how I pushed out an 11lb human? From my vag?"

Seriously. DH told me his shoulder hurt from fanning me with the cafeteria menu. Cry me a river!

My husband cut the cord with a pocket knife (it was sterilized in advance). I was going to PIP, but then decided you guys didn't want to see my placenta.

I think it is fairly common. I know it was discussed prior to DD's birth. I don't think DH cared either way. This is going to sound horrible, but I don't know if he did it or not. I will have to ask him.
