Obviously I like the name I was concerned about the popularity too but like others said, it is on the decline and isn't associated with a particular generation. We also considered Olivia, which felt too trendy right now for us. A similar name that I also like is Ellen.
My best friend in high school was an Emily and I so would love to name a future daughter that but DH doesn't like it.
I always choose names that I have positive associations with. I don't think popularity is that big of a deal. If we have a boy, his name will be Daniel.
It might be popular, but it's also classic and timeless, so if you love it, use it! I like a lot of the alternatives that have been suggested though. I obviously love Eloise (DD's name). My friends have an Emelia and call her Emmy.
I had lots of Emily's in my age group but I haven't run into any in Grant's (DS) school/play friends - I think you're good. But then again I had no idea Grant had come back and now DS has 2 other Grants in every activity :/
Emily is a classic and will always be high up on the popular list. It's popularity wouldn't stop me from using it like the names that are only on the top of the list for a few years and then drop off.
