DH and I planted a new flower bed along our fence this spring and I am having an awful time with slugs eating my plants. I know it's slugs because if I go out in the evenings I can find them all over a majority of the plants.
I have tried coffee grounds, beer in saucers, eggshells, and cornmeal in jars and the only thing that works is if I kill them by hand. I think they are starting to kill my dianthus and I'm wondering what else I should try. I know I can go and buy a spray but would love to try something organic if possible.
The classic approach is to bury shallow "saucers" filled with beer. The slugs are attracted to the beer will fall into the beer and drown. Not sure if they die happy. Jar lids work really well as containers- leave the top lip flush with your mulch.
While I don't drink much besides a west coast craft IPA, my slugs get PBR.

Ok, I didn't bury the saucers so I will give this a go tonight and see if it works. If not I'll move on to a slug killer. Thanks!

Sluggo. It's organic and will kill them dead, so to speak. That's what we use. It's mostly iron phosphate, so it's actually good for the soil and the plants. Won't harm your pets or kids, either (although don't let either of them EAT it, LOL).
