My friends did this last year. We LOVE having them close, its so nice to be able to borrow a "cup of sugar", pop over to watch their kid so they can do a quick errand, have them stop by to let the dog out when we are gone all day. Its such a great arrangement. We are building a new house 20 minutes away and I'm really going to miss them.
I wish I had a super good friend in the neighborhood. Our next-doors we are fairly close with, but I want more buddies in my 'hood. I need to try and make more friends in my little suburbian utopia over here.

I love having one of my best friends walking distance from me. We walk together in the mornings, she invites me to dinner once a week (my spouse works nights), and she does these great summer outdoor movie nights so I'm comfortable drinking and walking home after.
We loved living next door to friends when we rented. We subsequently tried to talk other friends into buying the house across the street. So I agree with everyone else - take your friend seriously and go for it!

Our best friends are living across the hall from us for 6 weeks. It's been awesome! They used to live a couple blocks away. Now they're moving to the town next to ours and will be 4-5 miles away and it seems so far.
We've been trying to convince a friend to buy a short sale in our neighborhood. Easy reciprocal dog sitting, wine, home improvement project help, a walk away. Win.

We bought a house in the same neighborhood as friends. It has been great. We get together every couple of weeks to have dinner, play cards, and drink. Then walk home. We go to the pool together on the weekends sometimes. She has also offered to watch our baby sometimes so that DH and I can have a date night once she's home (our DD is currently in the NICU, hopefully coming home in a couple of weeks), and he has helped DH with some house and yard projects and vice-versa. I am so glad that we moved here.
No issues with unexpected drop ins, we have all been very considerate of each others' privacy so far. I think that's the key.
We moved in to our friend's neighborhood. We asked if they would be offended and said no. It is the perfect house for us and we definitely all have boundaries. We are on a different street and we do not over visit each other. Always check-in first. It sounds like they may be relocating for H-friend's job and we are ALL super sad.
We love it. I am slowly collecting all of my girlfriends and trying to get everyone to "settle down" in our area. It's working very well. It is so fun to be able to walk back & forth, meet at the same local bars & restaurants, share cab rides and train trips, etc.
We all have separate interests and groups as well, so it works out perfectly.

I'd be SO ecstatic if a friend moved closer to us. Most of our friends moved away or are moving soon. I guess that's what we get for staying in our college town.. anyways, I think your friend was sincere about it. The only problem I could see is if you drop by unannounced like, daily. That would get annoying fast.
