My husbands cat keeps pooping then scooting along the carpet dragging poop. I am beyond frustrated. We are listing our house to sell on Sunday. I am scooping every day and completely changing the box twice a week. Her poop smells beyond horrific and our house is beginning to stink. We are clean people. I just had the carpets cleaned for the third time in 4 months. I can't afford this.
Background: Our vet said she was pre diabetic. So we put her on ROyal Canines High energy wet food. If we give her dry food, she binges then purges on it. (at least vomit doesn't smell). We have also seen mucus bubbles in the litter. Like attached to her poo. It looks just like a bubble from bubble gum but mucus..
Questions 1. How do you prevent a cat from scooting along the carpet with poo on her butt? 2. What can I do about the litter box smell? I use liners and change them 2 times per week. I scoop daily. Our house stinks like litter. 3. Is it back to the vet time? 4. What are symptoms of cat diabetes ? She pees a lot for a little thing.

I can't help with the diabetes, but definitely take her back to the vet and describe the litter box behavior. As far as the purging goes, is she free fed dry food? Have you tried feeding her twice a day? For the smell: Are you using a covered box? Is the box near an intake vent? Have you changed any air filters? Are you cleaning with something like Nature's Miracle? Have you tried another brand of litter that may absorb odor better? If possible, try airing the room with her box by opening a window with a screen. I've found that placing small cups of vinegar around the house can really help eliminate odors.
Thank you for your reply. We took her to the vet yesterday. She had anal glands expressed. They did blood work but we won't know the results until Monday. I did what you suggested. I aired out the room. We have a covered box. I changed the litter brand. I think her urine with the scent of the litter was overwhelming. Like the two things are a bad combination. She is being few moist food twice a day (unless we are out of town then it is dry food). I am going to try the vinegar. Thank you

I lurk on this board, but I'm also wondering if it is parasites. Scooting is a symptom of worms. Also the purging of food is a sign of hyperthyroidism. I'd go back to the vet, or I'd find another vet. If the cat is diabetic why isn't the vet giving medicine.
I'm not a vet, but my sister was a vet tech for a long time. I also have had a lot of cats.

My kitty has IBD so he gets some scary and smelly poop. I use the natural litter from Costco. It has lemongrass in it so it smells really nicely. I also use a baking soda, litter deodorizer. It is made by arm and hammer in the pet section. You can spray it straight onto the litter and it won't clump , I also spray the whole air area after almost every poop.
I would check anal glands, check for parasites and diabetes. Aside from that, is she a long haired cat? Is she getting poop stuck to her hind end when she poops? Maybe she needs a sanitary clip (clipping the long hairs so poop doesn't cling to it).

My cat does the scooting thing. Its annoying but he can't really help it. We found out after we adopted him that an infection from being a stray caused damage to his GI tract, so we have flare ups every few months.
Anyway, have your cat checked for parasites b/c that can cause the scooting behavior. Did they check for fungus or bacteria? If his glands were full it may take a few days for the behavior to end, not sure what your results were with that. If your cats stomach/bowels are inflamed causing diarrhea your cat could be trying to get relief by rubbing/dragging his butt. I would also suggest giving food in smaller doses, if you can maybe 3 times. Sometimes smaller feedings help with irritation.
