I'm just starting out, so forgive me if these are dumb questions. I did the insanity fit test yesterday and 30DS today. I think I'm gonna stick with the 30DS for now and then move into Insanity.
Anyway, my legs and lower back are KILLING me today. I think it's because of the fit test yesterday. It's definitely just because my muscles aren't used to it, I didn't injure anything. So tomorrow do I work out or do I take a rest? I'm not sure how rest days and all that work.

Rest days are important to allow your body time to heal. I generally workout every other day and on my rest days I will do light activity (walking the dogs, lots of stretching, etc.)

When I over do it I find a lot of relief from a bath with epsom salt. I also recently got a foam roller. If I'm really sore I usually do feel better if I go for a walk.
What days are you planning on doing 30DS? I would start with doing it every other day, and taking a walk or a swim or something on the other days. Rest days are important, but in general, I work out whether I'm sore or not just sticking to my workout schedule. Otherwise I would only work out once a week, haha. It really helps the soreness to keep moving too.
You're talking just muscle soreness, right? That isn't going to hurt you, and the more you do the less sore you'll be. If you are not used to that level of activity then it's fine to ease into it, but the soreness you are experiencing is normal and will go away if you keep at it.

Also, lower back muscle soreness kind of feels the same as tightness (at least to me). Stretch it out and take some ibuprofen if it's really bothering you. It's just something you have to work through. In 2 weeks you won't be getting sore like this.

My legs are sore but my lower back feels tight.
Lower back pain is always a red flag for me as a trainer. One problem with doing DVDs at home is that there isn't anyone to check your form, and it's easy to tweak your lower back.
With the shred, make sure your lower back is pressing into the mat for all ab exercises, and engage your core by pulling your belly button to spine during the rest of the workiut.
I'd suggest seeing a trainer for a session if you have pain in the future, it's probably a form issue.
I would definitely stretch, and take a rest day since it sounds like maybe you don't normally do that much activity.
30DS was really hard on my knees and back - definitely make sure you monitor yourself and take a rest day if you need it. You don't want to injure yourself somehow because you jumped in too fast...slow and steady wins the race

Thanks guys. I feel kinda dumb about all of this :/
I worked out quite a bit in my early 20's but after having my daughter I am much much weaker. I'm hoping to get a gym membership very soon and I plan on having a couple of sessions with a trainer if it's in the budget. DVD's are my only option at the moment and I'm tired of not doing anything.

It's not something that's uncomfortable enough to need Ibuprofen thankfully. I just didn't know if doing it again tomorrow would be bad for the muscles.
I'm doing 30 day shred too! I just had sore muscles no lower back pain. I'm on day 6, I tried level 2 tonight and I am so not coordinated enough for that shit! Omg. Pendulum lunges?! What the fuck. I'm not a graceful person though.
Anywho, doing anything is good! If you keep doing 30DS let me know, we can keep each other honest. Lol.
ETA: day 3 was the worst for me. Soreness and tiredness wise. It's been much better since then. (So far, we'll see about tomorrow!)
Yes! Let's keep each other accountable. I haven't ventured into level 2 yet lol.
Do you have the option of going to a swimming pool? I walk or swim in the pool at least once a week especially after I am really sore from high-impact/intense workout. Otherwise yoga would be great too to help you stretch out. I remember when I first started working out again I was really sore for the first couple weeks because my body was trying to get used to working out again. Keep going and don't give up!

I don't currently but I think there is a pool at the gym that I can use when I get a membership. I love swimming so that is something I should definitely do when I get the chance.

Definitely take advantage of the pool at the gym! I was told to do at least 1 day per week of swimming or even pool walking when you do high intensity workouts because it's good to give your knees and legs a break from the high intensity work. When I first start working out a lot my knees would bug me quite a bit so I started walking in the pool 30 minutes once a week and that has helped me so much. Yes, I look like an idiot walking in the pool, but it helps so that's all that matters

Just working out + doing the Insanity fit test = does not compute.
I was not one for Insanity, but I tried it relatively in shape and decided it wasn't for me. It's just WAY too much for a beginner. I'd start with 30DS and give yourself some rest days as you ramp up, and stretch thoroughly after the work out.

Lol, ya I know. I was looking around online the other day and saw some before and afters of people that were/are heavier than I am. I thought "hey! I can do it." No, no I can't do it lol. But I'm hoping at some point I can.

Don't let my words make you give up! But, I know realistically if a beginner starts with Insanity they'll probably give up. There's nothing wrong with ramping up gently. As you said, you have back pain now - you don't want to injure yourself and hinder any progress!

Oh no, they didn't at all. I told myself to start with something smaller after finishing the fit test. Obviously if I can't get through the fit test now the workouts wouldn't be much better lol.

The first time I did the Insanity fit test I was so sore the next day I could barely walk down the stairs when I got home. My H could hear me creaking down them and had to come check out why it was taking me so long just to get in the house. lol Now I'm on my second round of Insanity. It definitely gets easier!
@elizabethbennet - you can do it, baby steps. I think 30DS is definitely challenging enough when you're starting out. And IMO Insanity isn't at all appropriate for someone starting out. It's crazy hard and I hope you get a good base of cardio and strength work under you before trying it again, maybe after a month or two of consistent exercising. I just don't want you to hurt yourself. I ditto every word pantsparty said about Insanity.
I remember trying it last fall after a good 4 or 5 months of working out about 4-5x a week. It kicked my ass. My heart rate was through the roof. I really felt like vomiting, and not in a good way. And, just about 2 weeks ago, I did Insanity in a live class. I didn't vomit out of my mouth but (TMI ahead......) I did out of my butt. I even texted @misoangry to let her know I was currently having a butt explosion on the toilet after the class. It worked me that hard. Yikes. And this is after almost a solid year of exercising consistently. Maybe I'm just a wuss though?
Either way, I wish you tons of luck. You can do this!
Aww, I'm sorry you had such a bad reaction to it.
I think I am just gonna stick with the 30DS for now, it definitely still is a work out for me. I was sore this morning and did some yoga and felt much better so I'll go back to it tomorrow.
