I'm trying to convince SO that we should paint the kitchen/dining area pale blue. We have a lot of chocolate wood in that room though and he's worried it would look weird or too contrasty.
What's the collective thoughts on pale blue dining/kitchen areas?

my4girls I'm so happy to hear that. I think part of the problem is that a lot of pale blue rooms end up looking very beach house. And that's not really our style at all.
We have a blue kitchen and breakfast room with dark brown cabinets. The color is Behr Swan Sea, and we love it! I don't have a good picture of the kitchen but here's the breakfast room.

That can be true, but I think if you accessorize correctly you won't have that problem. Our house does have a beachy feel to it since we have a lot of beiges going on with the blues.
I definitely don't think it looks beachy in our house at all. and I think with the dark woodwork in your house it would be hard to make it look beachy at all! the only thing I would worry about with dark wood is it looking like a baby boy nursery with the pale blue and brown- I feel like I see that a lot in baby boy rooms
Our kitchen/dining area is SW Topsail (one shade lighter than the mentioned Tidewater) with an accent wall of Riverway from the same swatch. We have Tidewater in our living room if you want to compare the two. Our current trim is the medium colored orangey/brown, but we are slowly changing to white. I LOVE the pale blue. I don't think ours looks beachy. I think it depends on décor. thelittlehouseinthecountry.blogspot.com/p/our-current-home.html
our dining room in SW tidewater and I LOVE it. one of my favorite colors in our house
I just checked the paint can, and this is the color we have in our dining room too (although we didn't pick any colors- just what the builder chose). I love it so much. It's very chameleon, and turns greenish in the afternoon (not a bad thing in my room).
