Some of you are talking about going to Nordstrom to get fitted correctly, so why does Nordstrom have this chart on their fit guide page (at the bottom)? It seems like exactly what we've been doing "wrong" all this time...
They tend to size by eye, but as a few people have said, they've still gotten sizes that are "off" from being measured at Nordstrom. They're just the best general option if you can't/don't want to do it yourself. In the instructions at least they show you what to look for to know if what you're wearing now is the wrong size or not. Its kind of a halfway point between the really wrong way to measure and what seems to be a really decent way to measure.

Today I was in JCPenney (one of the few clothing stores in my little town). Even though I knew there was only a 0.2% chance of them carrying my size, 34H, I walked through the bra section. Yeah... The biggest cup was a DD, and they only had that in band size 36 and up. Even though it wasn't unexpected, I was seriously annoyed at bra manufacturers.
@fucksticklegit - so what if I made my sister do this and it turns out that instead of a 32B she's a 26D? O.o have you seen bras in that size? I think all the ones posted only have 28, which isn't really that far off considering, but ya know, thought I'd see if you knew what to do
From what I've found, there seems to be only one Polish company that actually makes 26 band sizes unfortunately.
Your sister should try some 28C's and D's, and check online reviews to see if any bras she likes have a history of running small.
I ordered a couple of Parisa Fe bras from barenecessities and the band seems to run a bit large, so I need to exchange them for a smaller size, but they seem like they'll be great otherwise.
I had a big disappointment at Nordstrom's in Chicago. I am wearing a 34C and measured myself as a 30DDD/E with "the method". The girl at Nordstrom's measured my rib cage at a 27 or 29 (she mumbled) but used the old method of adding inches and said I was a 32" band. They didn't have a good selection of 30DDDs when I asked for those. Boo. The girl also recommended a lacy Natori bra to wear with tshirts, but when I pulled my tee over it you could clearly see all of the lace. I think I got a dud of a sales associate.
@fucksticklegit - I did try on a 30 band that caused my skin to pull in weird ways like it was too small. But the 32s were easy to pull away from my body. If I get a bigger cup size will that make the 30 band fit better?

What cup size was the 30 that you tried on?
I'm pretty sure it was a DDD, but I was getting quad boob with it. The sales associate also said that was normal. Grr.

Omfg, yeah sounds like you got a real dud of a fitter. Quad boob is NOT normal. Try some 30 DDDD/F/G and you're just going to have to try stuff on til you find one that works best for you.

That's what I figured. By the way, she also wanted me to stay in the 32 band size because I'd have more options. JFC, lady, if I wanted an ill fitting bra I wouldn't be shopping the $$$ bras at Nordstrom's. Thanks for the advice!

And *this* is what's wrong with the bra industry and why 80% of women wear the wrong size.
Finally got around to measuring myself. Went from a 40 D/DD (that was too small on me) to a 42 DDDD/F/G. So I'm off to the mall to see what I can find!
I got back from Cacique and got 4 new bras (buy 2, get 2 free). I ended up in 42 DD's because the DDD's or E's were too big in the cup area. The 42 band feels great!
They make my boobs look awesome! I'm wearing one of them under a V-neck shirt I also got while there and I'm all "Man, my tits look good!" LOL. Happy boobies
I got my Panache 28FFs today. A little snug in the cup, but as long as I gain absolutely no weight they should be good. Also slightly more wide-set than my boobs are, but that is most bras on me.
Lurker over here! I'm usually on H&F! But it was intrigued by the "boob post". Victorias Secret put me in a 32D last year, but I measured myself at a 28 DD/E.
Got my new bra today! Fits nicely! DH approves.... ;-)

I went shopping and ended up fitting fine in 28FFs. I do find that the wires under my armpits do go a bit high and poke and the gore is probably a bit wide, but this is exponentially better than the 32s I have been wearing.
@fucksticklegit I just got one of the new bras I ordered. It's a 30d. My left boob is much bigger and I have horrible quad boob, but the right one fits perfect cup wise. Also, I feel like I have major arm pit fat squish out the sides. I even did the swoop and scoop twice and that just made the quad boob worse. What do you think I should should try? A 32d? Or a 30e? I know you said I should go try on bras, but I wanted to see what the all knowing about bewbs fuckstick thought first.
Youre supposed to buy the bra to fit the larger breast. That'll fix the quad boob and armpit squish. Tighten the strap on the smaller side and that should help a little, or you can buy inserts and stick one in the smaller side's cup to help fill it out. Try a 30E.
Sorry to make this a zombie thread, but I just now finally got around to watching the video. @fucksticklegit, I'm a 28dd. Apparently a freakish size? Nordstrom online has 1, a sports bra. Rack, none. Aerie, none. Soma? Nope. There are some at brastop but they're pretty pricey. I don't know; i'm not sure what to do.

What SourPatch20 said Barenecessities.com, figleaves.com, and Herroom.com all carry that size.
I can personally vouch that Barenecessities has an easy return policy in case you end up needing a different size or style.
Yeah its not the fit, its just the wire rubbing against the fabric. Someone mentioned washing with fabric softener a few times, but I'm not sure if it'll help.
Interesting just read the tips and a couple pages of comments. I'm not measuring myself now because I'm still breast feeding.....out of one boob currently though.
The question is what's a good bra to avoid the bra opening from the top so your nipple can be visible? Had this problem often even before nursing, well before pregnancy. I'm an A cup normally. I hate wearing some v-neck tops and dresses because of this. Do I just have to stay away from cute bras? I don't even want to know what I'm going to be left with after breast feeding. Well I already know what the left one looks like. There is no upper fullness whatsoever.

I have the same issue. I think it's a small boob issue for sure. I haven't resized myself (nursing and then TTC/pregnant) but I wonder if a tighter cup would help. I'm sure a push up type bra would help, since it moved the boob up, but I don't care for them. I feel your pain, though.
Yeah a push-up bra helps sometimes but it's got to be one that isn't too low. Like forget demi cups. (I think that's the word for it. I also don't like my band to be super tight and for the underwires to be pressing into me so hard just to push up the little that I have.
Just posting to make sure I never lose this thread.
Oh and I just need to put this somewhere and here's as good a place as any. I went into a local bra store at the beginning of last month and almost cried when I realized what size I now am. These darn things keep growing.
@fucksticklegit I measured carefully and got two different 28DDs, but one I can barely hook and one I cannot hook. I am going to try a 29 band. But, I also have the quad effect and the video insists that is caused by a too small cup. Couldn't it also be caused by a too small band, or am I being dumb?
ETA I forgot that the bands are only in evens.
etA 2: the gore does not lie flat, either. Maybe I'm like a 30 f. Who the hell knows.

Sounds like 28DD is not the right size for you.
Make sure you're measuring right up under your breasts around your ribcage for the band (snugly but not TIGHTLY), and try measuring around your bust (loosely) standing straight as well as leaning forward and average those two numbers.

@fucksticklegit - I HAD to bump this thread to say THANK YOU! Our first Nordstrom is opening in my town in two weeks & they had a pre-opening Fit event today to benefit a local breast cancer charity. Based upon the guide in the Bra Fitting 101 video, I figured I was probably a 36G instead of the 38D I've been wearing. Sure enough, I am a 36G in several Wacoal & Chantelle styles. I bought the Wacoal 'Halo Lace Comfort Back' Underwire Spacer T-Shirt Bra in nude and black. I'm hoping to find the Chantelles at the Rack.
