Since MM is wise on tipping, I have a question.
If you call in an order that you are picking up for take out, do you tip? If so, is it as much as you would if you were dining in?
I admit to being unsure in this case. On one hand, they still are putting together your order and bagging it up. OTOH, they are not refilling drinks, bringing you things you request, etc.
My DH picks up our take out orders and he doesn't tip, because he's cheap. If we're ordering from one of those places that do curbside pickup, he will go in to get the order because he doesn't want to have to tip someone for coming out to the car. Did I mention he's cheap?

Yes. If you order from a sit down restaurant there is more going into your Togo order then picking up from a counter top service establishment. The pay rate is also significantly different where a server is making $2.13hr. You tip.
I only tip for takeout at a couple regular places where they know us and give us extra good service, or for one-off extra good service somewhere else. And even then it's never as much as when we dine in, not nearly. Usually I just write in a couple bucks on the credit card slip.
I do, but just 10-15%. It depends on the place--predominantly take-out, like a teriyaki place, that doesn't really do full table service anyway, I tip about 10%. Predominantly dine-in, about 15%.
Or $1 per meal, whichever is higher. For example, if I call in for to-go burritos from the taco truck near us, I tip $1 per burrito.
I tip 10-15% depending on where I'm at and how friendly the person is. I've worked in several restaurants and they are all different. Some have the cashier person actually putting orders together and others are packed up by the kitchen and brought the cashier (or host, bar, etc). Unless the cashier is down right rude, I'll usually leave at least 10%.
One of my parents restaurants is a take out place with tables to sit down at. I'd say about 40% of people actually tip and they tip anywhere from 3% to 40%. I think 40% is a little crazy but 3% is perfectly acceptable and makes them happy.

I typically do not. Packing up my food and putting it in a bag doesn't warrant a tip in my world, or else I'd start tipping at Subway.
The last time I picked up take out from a sit down place, the cashier was clearly working it for a tip. She did everything from throw in extra sauces to giving me a free soda while I waited. She went so far above and beyond that I did tip.
Typically we don't tip, unless it is a big or complex order. I remember a Cheesecake Factory girl giving me a dirty look once for not tipping on one slice of take-out dessert.
Yes, I still tip, just not as much as if I were sitting down at the restaurant. In my opinion, that server had to take time away from other tipping customers to put my to go order together. I know this varies by restaurant and some places have the bar or kitchen put the order together, but when I served, the restaurant I worked at had the servers do it.

Exactly. You were obviously a server, from little details in the way you said that.
of course I tip. I think it's cheap not to. they may not be refilling my drinks, but they're taking the time to bag everything, provide condiments, silverware, napkins, straws and bring the finished product to the front, all while making sure it stays hot and looks appetizing.
we do $3-5, depending on what we order. we frequently split a $12 chicken platter at a local restaurant, and we will give $3 for that meal. if we get two entrees, we give $5.

I get pizza at a local pizza place that is only takeout -- no chairs in the establishment-- and I dont tip when I pick up. I do drop a $50 in their tip jar once a year at Christmas (you can bet I do this when I know they're looking!) I figure that covers a couple of bucks per visit, twice a month. I do also tip when I have them deliver, of course.
9 times out of 10 I do tip. Always if getting curbside. If I notice that a server/bartender is taking care of it. I don't tip managers because they are not suppose to keep it anyways.
When I was pregnant I hosted which involves the carry out portion. I would sit tables, pack meals, bring them to the cars, etc. A lot of people don't realize that a carry out/host does more than take your order and put it in.

Huh? Why not?
It may be only a corporate restaurant policy but every restaurant I worked at this was the policy and the managers would give to the staff on duty.

If it's a sit-down place, I tip even if I'm getting it to go. I even tip at a local bar where I'll order a sandwich to go, because I'm tying up the bartender's time and she's working for tips. If the place is take-out only and I order and pay at a register, I don't because I sure hope they're being paid minimum wage.
