Anybody read her? My IRL book club's pick for this month was The Sugar Queen and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it since I had never heard of the author. Apparently she writes stuff set in the contemporary South with "a captivating blend of fairy tale magic, heartwarming romance, and small-town sensibility." I'll definitely be reading more of her books.
Also, I am insanely jealous of the character who is followed around by books.

I read Garden Spells. It's pretty cute, not very heavy like pp said, but definitely a "feel good" read.
I don't know if all of her books are similar (it sounds like they might be), but in Garden Spells, the main character cooks and is known for adding ingredients that give her dishes certain attributes... like they make a person only remember the good memories, etc. I thought that it was a cool way for Allen to incorporate a little whimsy into the book but not so much that her other plot lines (like some serious family issues) felt forced or unrealistic.
Yup, I really like her. Like others have said, I like the element of magic, but it's so subtle and somehow just believable. Maybe because she doesn't try to hard to explain it. It's just there.
