Every month the people who have birthdays in the month may enter a drawing for a reserved, close parking spot. One of my staff has a disability and is unable to drive, other employees in my department drive her to and from work. My staff member entered the drawing for the parking spot and her name was selected. The winners are sent out over email to all location employees. Big boss sent me an email wanting to know why my staff member who cant drive was allowed to enter and win.
Agree with missy1. Why shouldn't she get a chance to get a close parking spot and to be able to share that "gift" to whoever drove her that day? Would Big Boss be willing to tell the disabled employee she isn't allowed to enter the drawing. Hello, lawsuit!
It's only for a month, why does big boss even care? Why shouldn't someone with a disability benefit from a close spot just because they don't happen to drive the car parking there?
I have a coworker who can't drive because of a disability. I wouldn't give it a second thought if she entered and won some drawing for a close parking spot.
Thank you! I dont care if the people who drive her use it, or if she wants to set up a lawn chair and sit in her spot on her breaks. If she wants to enter, I think she should, and I think she should be able to use her spot.

She can certainly enter the raffle and then win and use the spot. Good grief.
Raffle aside, I hope there is accessible parking available to her on a regular basis! Is it fair to assume this is a physical disability? I certainly hope she never has to travel far from the car to the building.
ETA: I should have said, this makes me think there is no accessible parking available to her on a regular basis, and that's an issue. Maybe your boss ought to spend his time rectifying that!
Seriously? "Sorry disabled co worker but we are going to exclude you from a company perk and drive home the fact that you are disabled. Oh and happy birthday! "

Her disability isn't such that she would need accessible parking, however, there is adequate handicap parking available.
Dear Boss, Employee was allowed to enter the drawing so that no one at Company X has to waste time fighting a completely justified discrimination lawsuit.

I think whoever drives her to work should get a close spot every day, not just for her birthday month.
If she has a handicapped placard, the person WOULD be able to park in the handicapped spot on the days he or she drives her to work.
If said person doesn't qualify and simply can't drive for another reason (epilepsy being one?), then I don't think it really matters.
FWIW, my company used to give away reserved parking spaces for people who had perfect attendance one week for the following week. AFAIK, however, the few employees who took public transit never won those spaces. And then they gave up and just assigned those spaces to management.

How about it is more than not having the threat of litigation.
Dear Boss, I would assume Employee was allowed to enter the drawing b/c this Company is not run by Douchebags and b/c Employee shouldnt be treated like a freak.
But see, douchebags aren't typically concerned with what is morally/ethically correct. So telling one that I did X "because it was the right thing to do" is ineffective. Andplusalso, if he's the big boss, then perhaps the company is indeed being run by douchebags.
