I am watching Hoarders on Life. It is so fascinating. My ex mil was a hoarder and she was still wonderful and I loved her despite it. But I have a question. The lady on this show received a summons that she would go to jail if she didn't clean up her act. Why would they waste tax dollars on sending these people to jail? I could Never live like that myself but how is it illegal if the hoarder lives alone and the only person it affects is themself?

It becomes a public hazard - buy I have not heard of jail time, just the homes being condemned.
There's a hoarder house a couple streets over from our house. It's a real eyesore and I'm sure it's affecting the property values of the neighbouring houses. Plus it stinks on really hot days.

A pretty intense hoard could serve as a fire hazard too, especially for the neighboring houses if close together. I'm pretty sure the pests also serve as a public health risk. When I was a kid I had to help my dad clean out my aunt's hoarded house after she died...I found a freaking dead possum in her house *gag*
