We had a pop up tent that we put out every morning.
I am less than excited about what I've heard about the beach...Idk if its as gross as the water in LA...in which case I definitely don't want to go in. Especially when the resorts pools look soooo nice. Lol
What brand is your pop up tent?
It was a $60 one from Target. It was cheap, and it only lasted for that one week. But it served its purpose!
OMG! We went to Kemah a few years ago for 4th of July...it was so incredibly hot I almost passed out. We ended up leaving and going to the movies instead
And water quality there kind of varies day to day from what I remember, but it can be on the murky side.
Nope, I meant Los Angeles. We went to Santa Monica & Venice all the time when we lived there. The sand was clean but the water always had stuff floating in it.
Oh, okay, with Galveston I had Louisiana in mind. Yeah, the water in Galveston is usually kind of brownish. At least you can't see the stuff floating in it?
And get an empty spray bottle, freeze some water in it, fill it the rest of the way up before you head to the beach, and mist yourself with the ice water.
We could see black, dark brown and green bands of something (sludge? Chemicals? Funk?) in the sand. My sister stopped and pulled over to show me how nasty it was when we visited a couple months ago.
i hate to make light of a natural disaster, but i really think the 1900 hurricane was trying to do the world some favors vis a vis galveston. the water is THE SAME TEMPERATURE as the air. and brown. and the seaweed stuff? omigah.
i drove cross country with friends after college and we spent a night camping in galveston in june. never have 4 people been so glad to get to houston the next day. i mean, HOUSTON. we were like "THIS PLACE IS HEAVEN ON EARTH." perhaps the fact that we pitched our tent in what turned out to be a freaking poisonous snake habitat influenced our opinion.
so, i advise you to develop a healthy fear of large open bodies of water before then so that, oops, you have to stay at the hotel pool.

I'd break out the eye roll if I weren't on the app. I grew up on those beaches. They're nice.

yeah, i've only been to santa monica once and it looked pretty nice to me. it was the same trip as the galveston trip. i'd have to say, in my humble 22 year old opinion, santa monica beaches >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>..............................galveston beaches

It's tar (which naturally seeps up from the ocean floor in oil rich areas).
Yeah, the beach isn't good, BUT its not dangerous. We go there so the kids can play. We just step over the seaweed and save our white swimsuits for Destin. Lol.
We go to a beach where you have to pay to get in, so they comb all of the grossness out of the sand. They also charge for chairs and umbrellas and don't allow pop ups, though.

Do you know of its anywhere near the San Luis?
I don't know. We go to Stewart Beach. They have restrooms and (cold) showers, and chairs and umbrellas for rent. I think it's $8 per car to get in and $20-30 for the day for two chairs and an umbrella.
San Luis? Stay at the pool. Rent a cabana. Pull the pg card.
The water is brown because of the way the current flows. The sediment from the Mississippi River flows down along the TX coast. Galveston beaches have lots of seaweed and tar. They aren't great but the water isn't brown from chemical or sewer runoff like some people seem to think. It's always been that way. That is why the water is so clear on the other side of the Mississippi River. Don't get me wrong, it's still gross and I don't like that I can't see down into the water. I don't like Florida beaches, either, though, because I'm extremely particular about beaches and only like ones backed in trees for natural shade.
The good news is that it's supposed to be 91 on Thursday, not 106 like today. Maybe go out in the morning when it's a bit cooler then head inside for lunch and a nap.
For restaurants, Mosquito Cafe (breakfast), The Spot for lunch, Rudy & Pacos (near the strand) for dinner. Don't miss La King's on the Strand. Super cute old fashioned candy and soda shop with ice cream, candy, etc. Lots of various Landry's restaurants. I don't care for them but they are popular.
