It is getting into thunderstorm season and now that it is nearing the Fourth, people are starting to set off fireworks in our neighborhood. The dog has developed an intense fear of loud noises (I say developed because we didn't notice anything dramatic when she was a puppy, but now that she is a little over a year she gets terrified). During a storm and for about an hour afterwards, she'll be hiding, usually in the shower, shaking violently. Taking her out of her hiding place and holding her just makes it worse, she wriggles free anyway and runs back in. A single firework went off half an hour ago and she is still jammed underneath the coffee table. She isn't normally a fearful dog, just the loud noises. Any tips? I hate to see her so scared, and for such long periods of time. We get a lot of storms in the summer.
Since the 4th is so close, I would talk to your vet about getting a dose of Valium, if you're not opposed to giving your dog drugs, to keep her calm. Give it to her well before the fireworks start. Hopefully it will take the edge off the anxiety. I think the training and other tips that Luckydog suggested will work in the long run, especially a "thunder shirt". That is a great idea and will help your dog know that loud noises are coming so she is not surprised. But, I don't think it will have much of an effect before the 4th, which is why I'd go with the Valium route just this once.
