I've been considering a maxi dress or just something casual.
1. I am not skinny (not quite plus sized, but definitely not svelte.) 2. I'm short (5'1") and very booby. 3. I think slight v necks or cross overs look much better on me than scoop necks. Scoop necks seem to make me look sooooo saggy boobed. 4. I need thicker over the arm straps to cover bra straps. No way no how are these suckers able to go braless, and strapless seem to just sag sadly. 5. cheap cheap cheap. I think I'd wear a casual dress but don't want to spend a lot on it in case i get very little wear. I'm talking I would prefer under $20. I know, that's hard, but they seem to be out there, I just suck at shopping. 6. Pockets would be a bonus. I hate wearing dresses b/c I use pockets a lot for phone, keys, and whatever random crap my kid hands me when there's no trash can nearby. 7. I'm not the most trim, so patterns tend to look better than plain color on me. If there are stripes, I'm thinking horizontal won't be the most flattering on me. There's a jessica simpson one on motherhood's site that kind of crosses diagonally that looks attractive, but it's still s$69 or something.
Sometimes the flimsy fabrics look really really bad on me. (Target). I did find a really nice pg maxi that actually looked good on me at the end of last pg at Target, but didn't buy (and regret it) b/c I figured i was due to deliver any day and why spend on a dress then. Should have could have.
So, if you're bored, have at it. Bonus points for sale items or free shipping or free returns. I really hate clothes shopping and suck at it. It's depressing as hell to me.
i have one maternity maxi, it's nom, it was expensive, and i wear the HELL out of it. everyone can suck it if they don't want to see me in the same thing all weekend. it meets all of your requirements, but cheap. for me, one or 2 good dresses was worth it (plus, i bought it last time so i've already used it one pregnancy).
barring that, i've had some luck with knit things from the gap, which frequently go on sale. their woven maternity dresses NEVER EVER FIT me, but the knit ones work great. i presume old navy might be similar, but haven't bought any there.

I know.
I tried on a kickass one last pg at pea in the pod but decided on a diff nice dress for $169. (they were both that much $$ but I was wearing it to a few weddings so I wanted the dressier one). I'm still mad at myself I didn't just shell out for it back then. I feel more crunched on $$ this year for some reason. I think maybe b/c last time I didn't have maternity clothes and now I have some worn out ones and they were more for work every day but I just hate to spend on them ?? I don't know. Pea in the pod large is kind of a crap shoot for me right now. My size sucks and I hate admitting it on here. Sometimes their L fits me, sometimes it's too snug.
Oh, and I called the store last pg after, and nobody could figure out what maxi it was, it was absolutely awesome, but it was the only one they had in the shop then. Should have been a sign.
THANKS!! I'll look at the gap and ON ones. I hadn't thought to look there for some reason. Sometimes ON materials don't do me any favors if they're thin and clingy.
Maybe I do need to shell out for a nicer one. That's usually my philosophy so I'd wear it more, but I don't want to spend money right now and I don't have time to shop w/o kid b/c we just have too much crap going on.
I had 2 Liz Lange from Target dresses that were comfy, flattering, and not expensive at all. They were sleeveless but you could definitely wear a bra (and bonus - were good for nursing). I got mine last summer but maybe there's something similar this year? Sorry that's not much help.
I have noticed in other pg and this pg that I love a lot of Olian's clothes but they are kind of pricey too (they're on that site you linked too).
I think the one at target I liked was liz lange. I haven't seen any this season that I liked a lot and the one I tried on in store just looked horrible on me. Maybe I need to try again now that I have a belly.
I just want something comfy to throw on when I'm hot as hell and tired and want something comfy and not feeling like I always have maternity pant bands around my belly.
This one seems like it fits your criteria except for under $20
That's cute.
The other ones posted like the ON ones were too, but I'm nervous about how thin/clingy their fabric might be. This one seems to have a little better drape maybe.
$20 is prob pretty damn flexible. I just want to get something I don't mind wearing around. Think of it as potentially yoga pants for hot summer w/ no a/c or pseudo pjs when I'm sick of wearing clothes for the day. Might be worn out sometimes for stuff, but I'm not as formal as I used to be when i was at work all the time.
I prob need ot take the time to shop soon, but I don't know when. This week is hellish for dh at work. I really need to get a hair cut, maybe color, and eyebrows done as well but it's all solo time stuff and things that are $ spent on myself, so I don't want to. Prob would make me feel a little less ick about everything. I currently hate my wardrobe. (could be the changing body thing though). It's like everything makes me look more like that in between fat stage rather than round belly. Some of my shirts make me look pg, others just look like I put on a ton of weight. I was 2 months further in pg for summer w/ c, and my summer clothes reflect that.
I got this dress from Old Navy. I'm 5' 2" and I think I got it in petite, it fits perfectly. Definitely have to wear beige undies under, but I love the neckline and I am a fan of the bold colors. I find that I get really hot in it though, I'm not used to wearing long dresses in this heat and humidity!

I liked the look of this one when I was flipping through their site.
I wonder if the scoop would look ok on me. (Sometimes they look so saggy). I wasn't sure if that print was insane. I tend to love super bright things but then don't know if I come across as a clown.
I seriously don't know how to dress. Ever. Pg even moreso. I get away with it more last tri when everyone just oohs over belly instead of noticing anything about you.
AND THANK YOU EVERYONE. I may not have commented on them all, but these are all very valid options.
ste - was it you who mentioned the orange dress? I like that cut, too. I would love the yellow but bet it's even mroe see-through.
Oh, and my lingerie has gotten boring and less lingerie-y over the years. It's basic undies nowadays.
They are. They're not quite as uncomfortable as regular spanx, but when you're already hotter than usual, it's kind of hot.
I'll wear it when I'm dressing up to go somewhere nice or actually go out, OR if they're helping keep the clothes up, like when the belly band part is too big and needs something to cling to, but not comfy for just hanging out. Or walking around a festival or somewhere hot.
It is nice and smoothing but ugh. I hate wearing it.
They really weren't! I got them from motherhood so they weren't really spanx. They were plenty stretchy and kept my thighs from chafing AND my legs from making my underbelly sweat when I was sitting. I was way more comfortable with them on than off.
Hear me out on the last one. They have some weirdo 90s ugly ass shit, but then they also have normal looking maxi dresses. I think maxis are one of the few things you can wear non-maternitty during pregnancy and still look cute. I probably have 5 from there.
